New to this game.. Just wanted to know how to get more phones during the trade deadline and the draft.
thx
edit: go it
I'd like to start new gm-mode and I want you guys to tell me which team should I pick. I also want to make some random players. Could you give me some new player names and star ratings so I can make them into the game. Then I could raport here what they turn out to be.

I'm assuming your edit says "got it".
In the odd chances that it doesn't, the answer is pretty simple:
Essentially raise your GM reputation.
There are lots of ways you can do this - make fair trades, offer fair contracts, complete GM challenges, etc.
But ultimately the best way to enhance your GM rep is by winning. I'm always an ******* GM, but always reach 3-5 phones within two or three years into my GM mode because of the success my team has.
Anyone ever figure out what the hell "league interest" means in the drafting screen?
When you end up narrowing a draft pick in the later rounds down to pretty much the same age, position, and potential, but only have league interest to go by and one says "high" and the other says "none" or "low" does it really matter?
On the rare occasion that I have had a chance look deeper into it, I have to say that it doesn't.
I've even selected and kept a bunch of high LI players from the later rounds on my organization for like 5-9 years just to see if they actually some sort of usefulness and 100% of them were never NHL ready.
So, in my Avs GM, both Toews and Kane went to FA. Toews signed an 11 mill per year deal with the Wild and Kane signed an 8 mill deal with the Flyers.
First time i've seen both go to free agency.
I am going to start a Leafs GM mode since I have time and I was disappointed on our performance this season. Expect a first post soon.
Cheveldayoff, Maurice Fired, Hunter Bros Hired

[Winnipeg, MB] - The Winnipeg Jets have cleaned house. The team has announced the firing of GM Kevin Cheveldayoff today, and also said that Paul Maurice will not get an extension. Instead, they have hired Mark Hunter as General Manager and Dale Hunter as head coach.
"We are extremely happy to be apart of this organization. The fans here are exceptional, and we want to build a team that they can cheer for. These fans deserve the playoffs" Said Mark Hunter.
"We put people in place in London that we are comfortable with. We will check in on them during the season, but our main focus is this team and making them successful." said Dale Hunter, when asked about the London Knights.

Hunters Make First Trade as Pre-Season Looms
![]()
[Winnipeg, MB] - The Winnipeg Jets have announced they have traded Michael Frolik, Grant Clitsome and a 2016 3rd to the San Jose in exchange for Chris Tierney and Tommy Wingels.
"Chris is obviously a guy we know a lot about. He plays for the Knights and is a kid we wanted under our control. We think he has the potential to be a key forward for this team in the future. Wingels is a young guy we really wanted. He is a solid two way player and we are very happy to have him."
Tommy Wingels played in 42 games last season, notching 13 points.
Frolik played in 45 games last season, only getting 10 points, while Clitsome played in 44 games and got 16 points.
Hello there. Long time listener, first time caller.
Anyway, I have a question for anybody interested in answering. When rebuilding a team, what position is better to build around? Centre or defence?
I'm currently at the 2014 draft with the Devils after a very successful year - conference finals. Unfortunately my team is older than George Burns, and I have only one good prospect (Severson) after trading away the rest for veterans - so I have to start a rebuild.
I have a trade(s) prepared to get the 3rd pick, which means I will be able to draft either Ekblad (65 4.5 ys) or Reinhart (67 4.5 ys). Do teams that build around a defenceman, and play a defensive style do well in NHL 14, or should I draft Reinhart and play an up-tempo aggressive style? I had set my team strategy to be an aggressive tight checking, strong forechecking style the past year, in case anyone was wondering.
If only Larsson actually developed in this game, this would be an easy choice.
All answers and input welcomed.

In the message center it said a guy named Jesus Fiddler achieved 50 goals. Then it said congratulations on hitting 2548 goals. I checked and there was no one named Fiddler in my GM mode in the NHL or AHL. It was from the Tigres from the QMJHL. Weird.
Welcome aboard Sir.
The correct answer to your question? There isn't one. I almost always go after the franchise center over the franchise Dman. Few things to point out for you:
1st - Your talk of strategies regarding aggressive up-tempo versus stingy defensive team? Only worry about that if you are actually playing the games. If you are simulating the games, then all team strategies (to what sort of offensive tactic your lines use to the overall forecheck of your team and everything in between), aren't factored in when the game is simming.
2nd - I almost always take the franchise center for a few reasons. I think that if you have a really good forward group, PLUS a strong bottom 6 with good defensive players AND a decent goalie, you can still do well in the playoffs. You can probably see it yourself - go into the playoffs and see what teams are doign well and have a look at what they have; in the conference finals it's not unlikely for at least one or two teams to have pretty average blue lines.
The average blue line can be papered over by good goaltending, good defensive forwards, AND some good offense (that your franchise center, like Reinhart), can give you.
3rd - The opposite isn't always true however. You can have great goaltending and a great blue line, but you'll rarely do well if you don't have the offensive talent. Offence seems to outweight defence in terms of importance in this game.
Make sense?
Now here's the kicker (LOL!). I would still probably select Ekblad in the draft because I think he develops better than Reinhart and is BPA - I think he comes out of the draft NHL ready, whereas Reinhart doesn't.
ALSO - picking up good centers via trades etc., is much easier to do in NHL 14 than trying to nab elite Dmen who always seem to pile on the trade value.
Hope that helps man.
Ask away if you have any other Qs - lots of great help here.
1. Unless my game has a glitch or it's just random luck, the opposite is true for me. To use this past season as an example. My Devils went 12-15-2 to start the year with the strategies set for a defensive style, but when I switched styles, the team ended the year with a record of 45-30-7 and went to the Conference Finals. This happens a lot more often (not the playoff success, that was a pleasant surprise) than not when switching strategies mid-season.
2. I can agree with that, my team being a great example.
3. Defence wins championships, unless EA Sports is involved. Then again, the Blues did make the finals (lost to Pitt).
I picked Reinhart for two reasons. The first being I literally had NO forward prospects with 3.5 or better potential after trading them all during the year or at the draft, and I already have a few good RH dmen (Larsson, Severson, plus 2014 draftee Honka). The second reason is I can draft and develop players to find chemistry with a franchise centre more easily than finding a second top pairing dman - I'm not the Nashville Predators (Weber, Suter, then Jones). That being said, I haven't, and probably won't save over the file, so I could go back and start another file, opposite to the current one, and draft Ekblad instead.
Thanks for the input. Seeing how you answered all my questions so thoroughly, how about some advise on investing?
Regarding your strategies - EA Sports have confirmed that they play no role on their simulation engine.
Regarding "D wins championships" - absolutely. In real life lol. However, I've done enough GMs (I've gotten to 2035+ on 8 or 9 different occasions ) and have found that an "average" D can be masked pretty easily by a great G and a great forward core, whereas an "average" forward group cannot consistently be masked.
