Dylan Strome has finally arrived

For a while recently he was struggling, seeming to try to do too much, which is often a recipe for not doing anything. Holding on to the puck too long, trying to force things. He’s gotten better every year he’s been with the Capitals, and even with this cold spell he’s well on his way to easily a career year.

Luckily over the same period of time PLD stepped up and scored over a PPG in the games Ovechkin was out, which really helped carry the load.

First 18 games 22.3% on ice s% 5on5
Next 16 games 5.4% on ice s% 5on5

It was clear he'd hit a cold streak sooner or later, way too much puck luck early on. Also the caps PP in their first 18 games was about 16% and went to 28% their next 16. That's about a 75% improvement.

Matched his career high in 69 games this year (nice), third consecutive 65+ point season since coming to Washington and flirting with a point per game this year.

If you were picked third overall and your career isn't going as planned, just make your way to Washington.

Kirby Dach and Jesperi Kotkaniemi says will do.

3 more seasons after this one at 5 million for him is the type of contract that'll extend your window.
It makes it incredibly palatable to take on the PLD contract (even though he's the other 3rd overall I mentioned and doing very well), their combined hit in the top 6 is not bad at all.

Throw in that Protas deal and it's a nice framework for said window

Mason MacTavish welcome to Washington
Lol how did his name come to mind? Man's already tied his career high in points and done so in the fewest games. He, Lacombe and Dostal will likely lead the Ducks moving forward.

A lot of legit repeatable lessons for other teams that want to follow the "Washington method" of a retool but to be honest the #1 piece of advice I have for St. Louis or Boston or anyone else is to have other teams give you two top 6 centers in their primes for free.

9 points in 5 games to start the playoffs. Yes, it wasn't against a top 5 center in the league but so far he is playing at a deep playoff run level for Washington. And this is without Protas on the line as usual.

I thought Strome was, without a doubt, the best player in the first round for Washington.

Meanwhile the other 3rd overall, Dubois, looked terrible. Dubois engagement level seemed to come and go, he lost all sorts of one on one battles, he seemed wary, at best, of going to the high traffic areas and his compete level felt more in line with a pre-season game than the playoffs. I was actually quite surprised by his play in the series.

The Capitals traded a goaltender that just got nominated for the Vezina trophy to acquire Dubois (and his dubious contract.)

In what world is that getting him for "free?"
