Sandin may have arrived as well
Leafs never should have gave up on him. Haven't seen the Caps but hope he's doing well, guy used to hit like a f***ing truck with a hard slapper. Only issue in Toronto was his footspeed, he got burned badly twice in the playoffs leading to two game winning goals against. Still wish we kept him.

Small sample
Let’s reach the 30 game standpoint first

But wow his underlying numbers are pretty good so far in this smaller sample

Until this year reminded me of Ryan Ellis without the super high end offensive hockey IQ that allowed Ellis to be a top pairing D despite his size and lack of foot speed. I really disliked trading the 2023 1st and Gustafsson (who has been better and cheaper than Sandin until this very season) for Sandin and absolutely hated the 4.6 against the cap extension coming off a bad year, but can't say anything bad about his play so far. On pace for 40+ points, near the top of the NHL in +/-, no terrible gaffes that come to mind, either he worked on his foot speed or his positioning and decision making got a lot better with experience. Helps that he is paired with Roy who is a two way machine and having Chychrun and Carlson firmly ahead of him, as well as a deep forward corps and coach that worked really hard with him. He's pretty much being allowed to play as much to his strengths as possible like Sergachev was in Tampa.

It seems clear that the Capitals believe they can work with people who the knock against them is their skating. Sandin and Strome being people who come to mind. So far it’s working, look at a guy like Protas, he looks like a different skater this year, McMichael as well. Even their first round pick this year is touted as a guy with a lot of intelligence and skill, but maybe the skating isn’t quite there.

The fact it took so long can't really be considered a great success. Too many struggles early.

A lot of people don't like Strome. When I tried to include him on my Canadian 4 Nation's Team, I got my <bleep> handed to me. Not sure why.

He's still not an amazing skater, but despite prior comments, he's very solid defensively. (It's easy to see if you watch him regularly, but for those who want numbers: he plays on a line with Ovi and they're doing really well 5v5, so who do you think is playing defense on that line?)

Everyone on that line is playing solid defense.

The last 11 games in particular have been abysmal in terms of production. Strome has just 1 assist over that time and 7 of the 11 games he's gone without a point. 3g 1a 4pts total in his last 11 after 6 pts in his first 5 games without Ovi. Ovi coming back tho, so maybe things will improve.

He also doesn't have the size to play in the playoffs the way the Leafs want to play...big and mean.
