Might be more growing pains next year as we could run a VERY young D corps. Our vet will be the grizzled 25 year old 5 year pro Josh Morrissey, followed by Neal Pionk entering his 3rd full NHL season, then potentially Heinola and Samberg. We're going to have to stock up on diapers (either for our bottom 4 or us when we watch the games )
I think the Jets will try their best to re-sign DeMelo, who's a good vet. I think they should also consider re-signing Kulikov to a value deal. He started slow but was very solid by the latter half of the season.

I'm with you that he hasn't been given a chance, but if it didn't happen last year when our lineup featured players like Bitetto, Sbisa, Dahlstrom, and Beaulieu I don't think it's going to happen. I hope he gets traded, I'm curious to see what he can do in this league.
Most likely follow in the footsteps of the greats such as Nic Petan, Spencer Machacek, Carl Klingberg, and Marco Dano :)

Oh I agree - I hope they do. Even then he only has a year and a season on JoMo

I’d rather pick up a bottom pairing guy from FA, than keep Kulikov

I think I would have agreed with you a year or maybe even 6 months ago. But I wasn't impressed by Beaulieu this season, and I thought Kulikov really started to play well over the final couple of months.

Why? He isn't as good, and recent history suggests he is just as injury prone.
It’s just a personal choice. I like Beaulieu’s game, when he’s healthy, more than Kulikov’s, and since they’ve both had injury issues, I’d rather take a chance on Beaulieu

Kuli is considerably better than the average available bottom pairing UFA, it is more of a matter if you can get him close to that bargain barrel price.
If it’s a low cost deal for a year, maybe. Otherwise I’ll pass.

Pionk helped Kulikov be a passable dman, IMO, but if he’s in the bottom pair, I would think the previous Kulikov version will reappear.

I’d much rather have Samberg as Pionk’s partner in top 4 and a reasonable contract in bottom pairing.

Personally, I’d keep Beaulieu over Kulikov
I like them both and hope they’re both here next season. Let Samberg score a few goals for the Moose. He’ll be the perfect replacement for Kulikov after one season.

Morrissey-Demelo
Kulikov-Pionk
Beaulieu-Niku
Poolman

Lol niku is not beating out Poolman who played well as soon as he got bumped down to third pairing. Also Samberg’s job isn’t to score it’s to provide much needed d- help.

Trade Niku with a 1st and other assets in a package for a 2C
Could replace Beaulieu with a low cost veteran for more experience if needed.

I like that idea, especially if it is for a veteran center...RNH would be nice.

Niku's qualifying offer is $882,000 according to cap friendly. The Jets not nudging that up to the million dollar range would indicate they see no future for him in the organization.

I see $840k. They don't need to nudge it a nickel based on his play. It doesn't say they see no future. You send that message by not making a QO. I yr at 840 says he needs to do better if he is to have a future in the NHL.

There is no spare money or cap space to throw around on sending false encouragement messages.

Does he not become an UFA if he is not qualified?

I don't think we get a 2C without giving up a pretty big piece. Much bigger than Niku and a 1st.

He would have to be re-signed for me to make the deal.

With how sparse the Oilers are at forward I can't see them moving RNH unless it's for a package that goes after a better top 6 player to play with Dair or McD and even then RNH wasn't bad with Drai.
