The only way he becomes available is if the Red Wings recent surge completely stalls out, Larkin is insistent that he has no interest in re-signing and is open to being traded to the Avs. It would also require the Avs to find a way to open up the necessary cap space to sign Larkin long-term.

The Problem right now is Detroit still have a chance to make playoff 7pts dehind #8 spot and 5 game in hand.
Yzerman will see this week and if Detroit still in the race.

I'm going to get lit up for this, but if Larkin agreed to that rumored 9 X 8 years with the Avs I'd trade Rantanen for him.

Lehkonen - MacKinnon - Nuke
Landeskog - Larkin - Newhook

With MacKinnon making 12+ next year, if I'm paying another guy in the top six 9+ million a year, I'd really want him to be a natural center play behind MacKinnon to carry the second line.

Plus Mikko is due a contract extension in 2.5 years that the Avs are going to have a hard time affording once they pay Byram/Newhook and finally aquire a real 2C. Get out ahead of yourself and lock down your center depth for a long ass time, Larkin is the perfect fit and perfect age for what the Avs need going forward.

I don't necessarily hate the idea, but I would have a real hard time giving up one of the 5 or 6 best wingers in the world for "just" a good 2C, and the difference in term makes it hard to justify Detroit adding much to make up for the significant difference in talent level.

I'm also curious who the pro scouts have targeted as potential affordable young 2Cs. With Toews $4.1m contract only having one year left, he could be a good trade chip as well, before he's too expensive to keep.

Can the Avs afford him? He would literally be the perfect #2 center behind MacKinnon.

They can afford him - but they can't afford to resign him.

My take is - Avs should do it.
Why? Because once Mack's new contract kicks in, you're not going to get any shots for awhile.
Probably gonna be 3-5 years before you have the caproom to do anything again.
Take shots while you can.

Larkin has a full NTC too, I don't think the Captain of the Wings would waive it just as things seem to be turning around.
I'm pretty sure that any guy who's gone 6 years without a glimpse of playoff hockey would LOVE the chance to play.
I'd be disappointed in Larkin if he turned down a chance to play for a real contender and doubt that he's got what it takes to be a winner.

They'll be 8 points out by the deadline.

Probably not since he's already making $9.25M per year. Even if he re-signed long term at $12 that's still only less than $3M more than they are already paying him.

It's not a terrible idea but I doubt very much that the Avs move on from Rantanen.

For Detroit to trade Larkin, there would have to be a few things happen :

1) Yzerman decides that he's playing the long-game and that this year's playoffs - whether they can squeak in or not - doesn't really do anything in the grand scheme of things because it's very likelly a 1st round exit with how strong the East is this year.

2) He would have to evaluate that whatever package of players, picks and prospects he's getting in return for Larkin would have an excellent chance to make his team better for the long-term.

3) In my opinion, there would have to be some sort of rift between the Larkin camp and the Red Wings organization on his true value and they really feel the need to move on. (massively unlikely in my opinion)

I think Larkin will be re-signed so the Avs will need to look elsewhere.

If Wings are trading Larkin extended they'll want a heavy futures package. Rantanen signed for 2 more years ain't doing anything for them

EJ's $6m cap hit comes off the books at the end of the season, and replacing him with someone making 3rd pairing money saves most of what Mack's raise is going to cost. And with the Avs almost always being injury plagued, we'll at least have LTIR savings to play with most years.

More likely the Wings trade for Newhook than the Avs trade for Larkin lol.

I have a really hard time believing that Stevie Y would say no to one of the best wingers in the league for a guy he can’t get to sign long term.

Worst case scenario he can’t get Rantenen to extend you could probably flip him for a bigger futures package than Larkin would return.

This is a weirdly unique scenario where a team would be willing to trade the better player for a positional need.

He can get Larkin signed in an instant. All he needs to do is budge a couple hundred K
