Friedman: Dylan Larkin requests trade

Larkin is a better player than Hertl when traded but the situations aren't completely different. Hertl was a sub PPG 1C who was as close to the sharks captain as one could be with Couture already missing time by then. Now, the Sharks were obvious sellers. Hertl had term left and knee injuries in his past. But he still had a fair bit of good hockey left in him. He asked for a trade, and went to Vegas for essentially two firsts with two thirds going back, and Sharks retained 17%.

Larkin is a hair under PPG most every season. He's the C. He would get more, but not so much more, given his age and NTC. I don't think you necessarily see a top 5 pick or a recent top 5 prospect definitely coming back in this deal. Also there's just a question of what Detroit does with everyone else, and therefore what kinds of assets they're looking for in the return. If they're still on the Yzerplan then I guess you're looking for a hockey trade or as good of a player coming back as you can.

Crackpot theory. What if the Devils use this as an opportunity to secure their position to get Quinn Hughes?

It's literally no secret that Quinn wants to play with Larkin. Minny will try hard to acquire him as well. But the Devils could get him very easily if they decide to move on from Hischier.

Does trading Hischier and Markstrom for Larkin and Trey Augustine make Bill Guerin's July 1st a living nightmare?

Obviously Hischier has more value than Larkin 1 for 1. The Devils would want to use it as an excuse to shed cap for the inevitable, and the Red Wings have so much goalie talent that would make the Devils less of a dumpster fire.

Not that I think this would happen... This situation is just fascinating.
Detroit has 0 interest in trading Augustine and acquiring Markstrom

Feels like the only real question about where he ends up is exactly how he ends up in Minnesota. Subsequent to that...how does Steven Y manage to flip whatever he can get from the Wild, for any kind of even halfway credible replacement?

To me, it kind of hints at "come on down, Elias Pettersson". In some sort of roundabout pseudo three-way deal.

ie. Larkin to MIN for some combination of multiple amongst Yurov, Stramel, 2027 1st, 2028 1st, and anything else they can manage to find left in the cupboards that i'm forgetting about. Maybe even Wallstedt or Gustavsson even though DET don't need them.

Then DET flip a bunch of that package and mix in some of their own guys like Danielson/Kasper, or Bear, MBN, or some of the young defencemen/prospects...plus a cap dump like Compher or something, to VAN for Elias Pettersson.

I think the pieces might be there to make it work...but it'd be one heck of a messy daisy-chained sort of deal, on a pretty massive scale.
Yeah you can stop dreaming buddy no one is paying that kind of price for Pettersson.

If the Ducks could move McTavich for Larkin, it would be quite an upgrade for them. What a jump for their team as a whole.
And it would be terrible for Detroit. McTavish would have to be a secondary piece in a package.

my speculation is hes a vegas golden knights for william karlsson and dorofeyev.

Vegas cant afford to re-sign dorofeyev without moving someone like karlsson anyway and this gets them someone they probably value over dorofeyev and sets them down the middle with eichel-karlsson-howden

The Wild are absolutely closer to winning than the Wings are. Not sure if you noticed, but Detroit didn't even crack the playoffs in a weak East and a toss-up division. Minnesota made it through to the Semis over a strong Dallas team viewed as very much a "contender"...then dropped a key cog with their only real Top-6C going down to injury.
They are closer to Detroit yes, but that's not what I said.
I said, they are not close to winning. They are not stable enough to win.
This year was the first season past the 1st round in 8 years after adding Hughes who everyone drool after and it still stopped in the 2nd round.

Really...where else is Larkin going to go that is outside Canada, more competitive than a team that very realistically could've been in the WCF with better injury luck, and just happens to have an actual Top-6C replacement to trade back and immediately plunk in to fill his spot? Wings are going to have to do some wheeling and dealing to make it work...somehow. Really awkward situation, and it really sucks when a key player decides they want out.
Tampa could be a landing spot.
Not sure what they would send back though.
You can have some combo of:

Byram
Norris
Mcleod
Quinn
Krebs
Mrtka
1st
Levi
Norris, McLeod, 1st sounds okay-ish. I like Norris.
Like Byram too as long as he stays healthy long term.

Would take more than him.
And it would be terrible for Detroit. McTavish would have to be a secondary piece in a package.
McTavish, McQueen, Solberg.

I don’t know if Detroit would move MBN or Bear straight up for EP40.

This serious? Crosby was a whiny dipshit early in his career. He got better Wings probably hoped Larkin grew up too
At Larkin's age, Crosby had already been a dominant force for years, he was one the most consistent and hard working player in the game and he had won 3 Stanley cups. He had also won a bunch of Art Ross, Conn Smythe, Hart, Rocket, etc... awards.

Meanwhile, Larkin skates around with a perpetual FML look on his face and ain't winning individual trophies unless they make the Cream Puff award.
