Dylan Holloway 61gp 19g 26a 45pts

“tHiS iS dELuSiOnAL cOpIuM”. They had zero cap space, and they still have zero cap space, and they are going to need every penny to be able to try to re-sign McDavid and Bouchard. They simply could not afford to pay Holloway and Broberg what they wanted. The decision to let them go was a calculated move done out of foresight. It’s sucks, but that’s the way she goes sometimes with the cap. Also, this has nothing to do with Bowman. This mess is the result of Nurse contract, among other mistakes.

They signed Skinner and Arvidson on July 1st under some delusion that these two washed up has beens would solve their problems with scoring wingers. Arvidson is so frail he gets injured bending over in the shower to pick up the soap (hopefully not for reasons you are thinking of - get your mind out of the gutter). Skinner must have been pinching himself when an idiot GM offered him 3 million "Yay I will finally play in the playoffs!"on top of the money he was already getting for the Buffalo buyout. Wow how motivated do you think he is to prove himself to Edmonton fans?

Their combined stat line for Edmonton this season: 20-22-42 at a cost of 7 million bucks.

Holloway signs on Aug 20th for a 2x2.3 million contract. His stat line at 1/3rd of the cost: 22-29-51

Gee I wonder what the Oilers could have done with the 4.7 million they could have saved? Oh wait we already know! They would have blown it on some other washed up winger or dman.

Nothing to do with Bowman? I would use the laugh emoji but it's broken.

I thought it was because they chose to go after Jeff Skinner instead - money was there

Is "revisionist history" an Oilers best friend or something? Posters are oddly in lockstep with this as a defense.

...But that's also exactly how we evaluate people's work in EVERY domain? Yes, the GM/President is supposed to know better than the general layman, and it's pretty clear they pursued hype over sensible roster construction. Grabbed a bunch of wimpy, complementary wingers, instead of retaining their homegrown talent just coming into their own.

Who cares how many posters here were ready to give Jackson a handy over FA? All that matters is that they f***ed up, incorrectly evaluated their roster and their performers, made the team worse, and didn't/couldn't address ANY of their deficits because they have all this dead cap and bloat.

I think the Blues taught the league a lesson pay your talent or offer sheets are coming from teams.

Oilers went big in FA and still have an amazing team. Currently have the best player on the world Draisaitl going on a tear could hit 60+ goals.

They had some strong young talent coming up the pipeline but refused to pay them fairly.
I think we will see some teams get offer sheeted these next few years if a team focuses on vets v RFA's.

How is that?

Even if they'd signed Broberg (~$3-4M) and Holloway ($1.5-2M) prior to the offer sheets, that would still have been $5-6M in total cap.

Oilers spent $4M on Arvidsson and $3M on Skinner (for a total of $7M) and started the year essentially cap-maxed.

So if they'd kept them, they'd still have been only ~$1M below the cap.... maybe I'm answering my own question here, but are you proposing they'd then turn around and use Holloway & Broberg for Rantanen? I'm not sure even that math works.

I also think if they'd kept Holloway and had a young 19 goal winger, there'd be little interest in shiny objects like Rantanen.
It was reported (EF I think?) that Broberg was asking 1.8M and Holloway was asking 1.2M before other teams had a chance to make an offer, that's 3M combined or the same amount they gave Skinner. Also, if they were signed to those contracts they never would have gotten an offer sheet and could have been traded though it probably would have been best to keep them at those low cap hits.

All of your analysis is things that would have made more sense to bring up if seeing the future was a thing. Arvidsson is injury prone, yes, but he also produced at a high rate to close out last season. He hasn't had any major injuries this year, odds were good that he would have produced at a better rate this season if he was healthy. He was a safer bet than Holloway to produce. In hindsight, do I wish we kept Holloway and left Arvidsson to someone else? Absolutely I do. But hindsight is 20-20. Skinner is a different story. His issues this year have rested with not being used properly by Knoblauch. 3M for a guy with Skinner's track record is fair. Skinner's production this year is low, but there are plenty of stats that show he would be producing very well if he was not moved to the 4th line or benched.

Holloway comes to play every night. He brings energy, skill, speed and physicality nightly. He’s probably a perennial 25-30g scorer. Such a great player. He’s a core core player and the type you need in the playoffs.

I'd expect that to be his floor going forward with his tools and the opportunities he's worked himself in to. He's got a great shot, great speed and looks really good handling the puck in tight. One of the most exciting forwards I've seen come through here in a long while.

Those aren't the numbers I heard. I heard $1.5-1.8 for Holloway and I heard nothing for Broberg... except that there were rumors he still wanted out unless the team made a big commitment to him (which I assumed meant a reasonably significant bridge salary).

In any case, I think we can agree that before Skinner and Arvidsson they would have been kept, but I don't think it was a foregone conclusion that they'd have Rantanen level spare change lying around this deadline. A big (like bigger than $5-6M) was probably still out of the question...
