Anybody mad at them for chasing the money... is just stupid, Can't blame them at all. You sign the paper all day.

2mil for player that had 9 points isnt a good bet when youre up against the cap. Its great hes having a great year, but given the information you have at the time and where the oilers were on the cup window and cap situation...you walk away from the two offersheets. You dont let other teams set your contract prices for your prospects.
Don't give teams the opportunity to do so by lowballing them so hard they look elsewhere.

A 2M cap hit is nothing. It’s about as low risk as it gets. And you keep mentioning 9 points as if he was in a position to accumulate large quantities of points in Edm. It’s not about the total points he puts up. It’s about the quality of player he is and the fact that even given lower minutes in a depth role, he would have been quality depth.

again, he had 9 points last year and 2 mil puts the oilers over the cap.

He has a better situation in STL to grow than he did he EDM and has many more opportunities to play.

His future is incredibly bright. He's 3rd on the Blues with 32 points and has a motor that doesn't quit. His confidence seems to be through the roof. He has 13 points in his last 8 games including a hattrick vs Detroit. He's fun to watch.

I don't expect to see 20 offer sheets accepted each offseason, but I'm guessing more will be attempted than previous years.

Was a shockingly bad decision by the Oilers not to match.

He didn't have the numbers, but I thought he was a dangerous player in the playoff last year. Glad he found a home in St. Louis

The Oilers are the oldest team in the league. They need to retain younger players on cost-controlled contracts. If you’re talking about cap issues, Holloway at $2M is not that.

Nice to see Holloway having a quality year. You saw glimpses of his potential the last 2 seasons, he just had trouble staying healthy once he started to look comfortable on the ice. Big miss by Bowman by not matching that offer sheet, or letting it get to that point to begin with.

Choosing to sign Skinner instead of keeping Holloway was a major, stupid, mistake.
At the time of the Skinner signing, the Oilers were not aware of the impending offer sheet. It wasn't a simple situation of choose one or the other. If the Oilers were like the Knights and could afford pissing off free agents and getting a bad reputation, I guess they could have traded Skinner away but instead they banked on Podkolzin for $1M less to replace Holloway, and that has been a great bet.

Total mismanagement by the Oilers and a smart move by St. Louis to recognize the Oilers weakness and offer sheet both of them. I honestly didn’t expect much from Holloway before their playoff run but he really impressed. I agree that Holloway wouldn’t be putting up those numbers in Edmonton but he’d be a huge add to a weak bottom six.

Podkolzin is that. But we’re managing with our sights set on this Cup or Bust year. For example a proven vet in Henrique was chosen over the the annual playoff disappointment Mcleod. Obviously won’t be ideal from a long term view. But the Oilers are still doing moves with an eye on the future. Picking up Savoie and trading into the 1st round for Sam O Reilly speaks to that.

Nobody knows the future, but it's GMs job to anticipate such risks. I mean, if you want to say that the Oilers did not realize that the players they left exposed to offer sheets are actually any good, and could be viable offer sheet targets, well, that's precisely the criticism being thrown at them.

Granted, right now it does look like Oilers damage control worked out ok, at least as far as Skinner/Holloway goes. Somewhat ironically, trading for another team's trash (Podkolzin) worked out much better than Skinner signing. I would say that Podkolzin is currently taking the roster spot meant for Skinner, while Skinner is actually replacing Holloway.

Still shocked we didn't match, always liked this player. Enjoy St. Louis, another gift from idiotic Oilers management.
The fact that the Oilers' front office has been mediocre at best and yet the team still came within 1 goal of a Stanley Cup is a testament to how superhuman #97 and #29 truly are.

Probably one of the best offersheet usage ever. What a steal.

No one in their right mind would ever trade Holloway for Skinner + Podkolzin. Its just a poor asset management move.

And what does that hypothetical have to do with my post?

Like I said, I would have matched. Like I said the Oilers didn’t choose Skinner over Holloway, that was a decision made before the offer sheet. And like I said the Oilers replaced Holloway with Podkolzin, and it remains to be a good bet. For a $1M less you are getting a better defensive player with decent offence but not the good offence Holloway is providing.
