Somehow the Penner discussion thread got hijacked, so I thought I would start up a separate one for King.

Bottom line, this guy is seemingly very divisive for Kings fans. Either you love or hate him, it seems.

Well, there really is only one vote here, and that is Sutter's: he loves the guy. So if you hate him, you are going to have to learn to live with him as a permanent fixture on that third line.

For a team desperately lacking in quality LWs, I would think that those of you that hate this guy would realize how important he is to this team, as presently constituted. True, he may not be lighting up the scoreboard, but he does all those "little" things that Sutter loves: forecheck, forecheck, and more forecheck. Every once in a while, he makes a great pass for an assist. True, I would like to see him get more scoring, much more consistently, as he showed the Cup season. Here's to hoping last season was the so-called "sophomore jinx."

Hate him. I think we have some better options for next season to throw him out.

I think with richardsons departure dwight king is very suited to take over the utilities roles Like richardson he can play all 3 postions and does have the coaches eye to get into more games. At least thats how i would like to see king become.

I remember reading somewhere that the possession numbers were good whatever line he was put on. I don't know if that's true or not, but...

He was called up after the midway point of his first season, played a lockout-shortened second season, and - like everyone else - hasn't had a training camp with Sutter. He has a total of 74 regular season games played - still less than one full normal season.

No, he's not the second coming of Wayne Gretzky, but I think his game will improve as he gets more coaching attention this year.

The Kings have been very thorough in bringing prospects along step-by-step in the Lombardi era from each milestone to the next - why do fans still have this sink-or-swim mindset when the kids finally make it to the NHL?

I like Dwight King is the lineup. I don't want to say he out of place because he's not, but I think a guy like Frattin could do better in that role. I think Dwight should be demoted to the 4th line and battle it out with Nolan. He would probably be more effective in that spot.

He has a role and I think he does it well. I like him. I also know the younger guys look up to him so that's awesome.

I dont mind him. I was very impressed when he fought Reaves. The guy plays his role and is cheap.

I have no complaints if he's on the 4th line. He does not belong in the top 9. With the current lineup I wish clifford would get more looks on the 3rd than King.

We clearly need to trade him. Brown isn't a top 6 forward and King is. Furthermore, King should be our captain and we can't just strip Brown of the C. Extend King for 8 yrs, $45.2214 ASAP!

On a serious note, I was harsh on Dwight a bit but he's far from the worst option at LW. He's better than Penner but that's not hard.

Agreed. He can do on the 4th not the top 9

Penner aside, do you prefer King on the 3rd line over Clifford or one of the kids?

I can't even answer that because it depends on who our 2nd line winger is. If it's Frattin, then yes King on the 3rd and Clifford 4th. But if Pearson makes the team like I expect, I think we see Frattin on the 3rd, Clifford 4th, and King rotate in and out of the lineup. If hell freezes, pigs fly, the Sharks not suck dick, and Bud actually signs with us, same as before but with Bud in Pearson's spot. There's quite a few options on LW as it is and I don't think we'll really see consistent lines. A lot of guys will move in and out of the lineup and up and down lines.

He's not better than Penner. He's just cheaper than Penner. Penner is an asset in the playoffs and a no show in the regular season. King is a no show in the regular season but a liability in the playoffs. If Penner was willing to take a one year deal for what we had left on the cap after signing the UFAs plus King's salary, probably adds up to 2 mil, I'd do that fast. I might even trade a defenseman to give him a bit more since we seem to have 20 of them.

King had the exact same number of points as Penner in the playoffs. King isn't very good defensively but Penner certainly wasn't better, at least not significantly.

Did....I just...defend Dwight King??

King is actually in the right spot most of the time, he has decent Possession of the puck and his +- is not bad.

You people make King out to be a lot worse than he actually plays.

Some of you did the same thing with Stoll. Also Muzzin, Muzzin didn't even play bad in the playoff's.

Yes, I like him too. Dwight King is durable, a really hard worker and is defensively smarter than Kyle Clifford (offensively Clifford is better).

24 years old D. King does his job (3rd line LW), but 30 years old Dustin Penner doesn't do his job (2nd line LW).

The liability scored 5 goals in the playoff last season and knocked out Pietrangelo

Yeah, he showed up for just one series and has disappeared since. People need to stop using scoring as the only means of having an impact on things. If we are speaking solely of playoffs penner brings way more than king.

Bottom line is They both need to be replaced.

Some people just live in the past when it comes to King. They all had great playoffs.

Lets stick to last year okay.

King cant handle passes, and doesn't hit. All he has is size. And he's not too hot on the boards for a guy with that kind of size.

He's a 4th liner. And even for a 4th liner, there are better options than King.

What does Penner bring when he's not scoring?

People love to hate on King because he doesn't wow people. He isn't skilled. But there's not a single Kings forward who is as consistently the first man in on the forecheck as King.

He fulfills his role and doesn't take shortcuts, and he does it for a reasonable price.

I neither love nor hate him, but he does get a lot of unwarranted hate. From a pure skill standpoint, there are definite upgrades. But he has an appealing combination of utility and cost where he is a low maintenance option at left wing. What you see is what you get.

Lets hope people apply that same mentality to A-mart then. Don't live in the past, cause A-Mart was terrible this year.

You people can't have it both ways.

King managed to suck his way to similar stats as Penner for a fraction of the price.

Last season he did more than just scoring, and he was a damn rookie.

And to the people who keeps saying stop living in the past, they made it look like we are talking about 5-6 years ago...but it was 12 ****ing months ago.

I guess we should trade Kopitar and stop living in the past? Nobody's saying King is the second coming of Gretzky, and he might be better suited to play on the 4th than on the 3rd line, but he's far from being useless. Btw, he's also our better fighter IMO.

I like King more than anyone on the bottom six, but he was as much of the problem with the Kings bottom six last season as anyone, to many 4th liners, not enough good 3rd liners.

King, Lewis, Clifford, Stoll, Nolan and Fraser were all fourth line quality by the end of last season.

All of those guys (with the exception of Fraser) have all shown flashes of being more than fourth liners, but the last memories of King and his bottom six teammates were playing awful in the playoffs. And it appears the bottom six will be largely unchanged, and that makes me nervous.

The Kings desperately need a few of those guys to emerge as quality third liners, perhaps King will be one of those guys, we'll see.
