Yeah, I could see The Rock in a remake of The Wrestler someday, haha.
The resemblance between him and The Rock is uncanny!

There we go. In 20 years, he can play an old, washed up version of The Rock, the alternate reality one who didn't go into movies, but, instead, was caught with the male prostitute in the men's room at the height of his career, lost his wife, became estranged from his kids and hit the bottle and syringes. And the 2036 award for Best Actor goes to...

I agree. Maybe if he slims down, then he won't be typecast so much. Schwartzeneggar and Stallone never won an Oscar....too large.

Well, Stallone was nominated for acting performances twice, once for Rocky and once for Creed (which he also won the Golden Globe for), so he's had two "Oscar caliber" performances. I think that that's a bit more relevant than whether he's actually won. That said, I do agree with your general point that Johnson's physique is an impediment to getting the better roles and being considered a serious actor, though the perfect role could still come around (like Stallone as Rocky or Rourke in The Wrestler).

That this thread is not called "Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson" is appalling

Well next year he's gonna be in Baywatch, which just screams "Oscar bait". :sarcasm:

Anderson: Hello, Fry. Remember me from Baywatch: The Movie?
Fry: Uh...
Anderson: It was the first movie to be shot entirely in slow-motion.
Walt: It hasn't been made yet.
Anderson: Then he doesn't know I won the Oscar?

He's the only action star I see approaching the charisma of an 80s Shwarzanegger. He should be cranking out Predator, Conan, Running Man sequels and then worry about Oscars or Governorship later.

so much this.

been saying for awhile now love to see The Rock do a Commando/Running Man/Conan or Predator movie.

Closest we will ever get to Arnie 2.0 imo

He's a solid actor, when he first started out he was very hit or miss in scenes, let alone movies altogether. He's honed his craft quite a bit since Scorpion King. He's become a guy that can handle his own in comedic, dramatic, and action roles. He's starting to really hit his stride right now.

I didn't watch the show Ballers enough (I hate the whole Entourage and exploiting women part of it, but with this subject, I guess it is that world), but the few episodes I did see, I was impressed with Dwayne's range. He's come such a long way.

Well, he's not black, so I guess he has a chance to be an Oscar nominee.

Wow this is asinine. Are you with those that think Oscars was white washed because they had some agenda against race? Or are you going to look at it how it was, not many strong movies with people of color in them whether they were asian, black or brown.

This sort of crap is so pathetic, leave it on those lame sites like Imgur where everyone is triggered by race.

He's supposed to play Black Adam in DC's Shazam! movie in a few years.

Next year, this is bittersweet for me. He was originally signed to play Lobo, which would have been fantastic casting if it weren't for the fact that DC/WB couldn't sort their **** out and that's been a DC issue for a long time (Loss Whedon to Marvel because of delays with Wonder Woman, etc). So at least they used their guy under contract for something else, I think he'll kill it as Black Adam. The funny thing is they signed him to play Lobo, then that didn't work out so they put him as Black Adam in the Shazam movie which didn't pan out so they just went ahead with a Black Adam movie and want to use his as that anyway. I wonder if it would have changed if DJ had a few flops instead of picking the right roles to become a hotter commodity.

On the topic of Dwayne Johnson going for an Oscar any time soon, this is the list of films that he's attached to in the near future:

Central Intelligence - buddy cop movie with Kevin Hart
Moana - Disney animated movie
Furious 8
Baywatch
Journey to the Centre of the Earth 3 and 4
Jumanji
San Andreas 2
Skyscraper (that China Die Hard movie referenced above)
Doc Savage - Shane Black directed action movie
Rampage - Movie based on 80s video game
Shazam - DC comic book universe
Robert Lundlum franchise - a spy action franchise

So, not a single film in the pipeline that skews Oscar worthy. Some of those films will drop off, but, that's enough in the pipeline for the next 5 years easy. That's a ridiculously busy schedule, and doesn't include other projects like his HBO show.

I recall all the bitter wrestling marks calling him a flop early in his acting days and mocking him for doing different roles.

Good times.

He's great in action movies and entertaining in comedies because he's so charismatic.

But for more serious roles such as Pain & Gain and HBO's Ballers, I can't get into it because I keep expecting him to throw out some awesome one-liner or rock bottom somebody.

I thought he was great in Pain & Gain, a perfect utilization of his acting abilities.
