Nice call on the Vinnie one. I forgot he finished his career in LA, and that wasn't that long ago. He hung em up in 2016, only six years ago.

But Hossa? I'm not sure he qualifies here. I get what you're saying that some younger people might not realize it since his Ottawa tenure ended almost 20 years ago, but he played almost 500 games in Ottawa over 6+ seasons.

My rule for this thread, and it isn't anything official, is that I try to keep it under two seasons. I usually go a step further and try to stay under 100 GP.

who is this?

Yeah it was a particular series of events. St. Louis had Brian Elliott and a still Calder eligible Jake Allen as their NHL duo. In the minors they had Jordan Binnington in his first full AHL season and vet Matt Climie.

Elliott sustained a knee injury which was going to keep him out 4-6 weeks. St. Louis didn't feel totally confident in an Allen-Binnington duo, so they brought in Brodeur for a tryout and signed him a couple days later. I don't think it was meant to be a long term signing, although I'm sure Brodeur was hoping his play would keep him in the NHL somehow.

The previous season, St. Louis a single point behind Colorado for the division title. As a result, the Blues got a tougher first round matchup against Chicago and lost. So maybe on the surface it didn't seem like a big deal to give a handful of starts to an unproven AHL guy, but a couple points might have been the difference between getting out of the first round and a few million dollars in additional home game playoff revenue.

Elliott ended up missing 15 games. Brodeur appeared in 7, started in 5. But his play wasn't enough to keep a spot in the NHL. As I remember it, the Blues didn't play in New Jersey during that span. So when they played at the Islanders, a bunch of Devils fans attended the game. Marty didn't start but ended up playing in relief and picked up a win.

10898152_10102856455676754_1576260757569913817_n.jpg

And then ironically for me, I got to see Brodeur's final NHL game at Anaheim in early January; I thought about flying out to see the Devils season finale the previous year thinking that was going to be his last game.

Word was that Elliott was close to returning so I figured that would be my last chance to see Brodeur and possibly last chance he was going to play period. Definitely weird seeing Marty in a Blues uniform. His last NHL save was a beauty glove save on Jakob Silfverberg on a partial breakaway. Brodeur would officially announce his retirement at the end of January.

11015349_10103012905090874_2127257579320261841_n.jpg

It was a nice palette cleanser as Marty then was free to play in a 1995 Cup reunion game several weeks after retiring. So my last time seeing him play was in a Devils uniform. Although in a strange sight, Brodeur played most of the game as a forward (while wearing goalie skates).

That photo of Olczyk with the Kings' silver & black jersey, just before they axed it, is a doozy.

That was a crappy team. Olczyk had only 44 points, but that was third on the club (just behind Ray Ferraro). Olczyk had the only Kings' hat-trick that entire season, on January 7th 1997 vs. Vancouver.

Early that same season: Petr Klima was their teammate!
