I happened with Orpik getting a buyout last season, but the last rental I can remember doing this was Tkachuk's *wink, wink* rental with Atlanta then going back to the Blues.

Yeah if I were a Sens fan, i would keep my expetations extremely low about this. He’s good as gone if he isn’t signed in the next few weeks

The only expectation we have anymore is to be disappointed so it's ok.

I could see it for the same reason @DudeWhereIsMakar pointed out - Ottawa and Haliburton are pretty close together.

It will come down to a few personal choices for him but that is one that could win out in the end.

Didn't they already report the Sens wouldn't come off $8m a year and that wasn't enough.

I've seen that they made an offer of 8x8 and that it would have to increase, haven't seen it suggested that Ottawa wouldn't come off of it. As far as negotiations go, it seems like Duchene is more interested in the future of the team, the latest meeting with player/agent was reported to be more about going over the plan moving forward than actual dollars.

I honestly don't really buy that if dealt Duchene would be interested in coming back, I think it's more about saving face than anything else.

The correct expression for this is "doing a Chapman." Since it's not being used, I doubt it is legit.

I think Bob McKenzie on his podcast referenced how Duchene enjoys being 'the centre' on a team which is why he enjoys Ottawa. He will be their franchise centre going forward.

If it were to shake out for Ottawa that way, it would be a great for that franchise.
He spent 8 years in Colorado trying to be a franchise center. He couldn't handle it, had very long cold streaks. He gets frustrated easily and it affects his game.

He would be a perfect 2c on any team with a legit 1c. Probably a top 5 2c.

I don't get this report. If that's the case Senators need to just sign him now.
What's the wait?
We all have seen what both Mathews and JT signed for. It's easy to calculate what his contract should be.

He wouldn't sign a one year deal. At this point he d want his cash-in deal that takes him to his retirement years. Maybe that's with Ottawa but he would at least explore other options in the summer if he were traded now.

And imo this could be all bs from his side just to keep one more suitor in the mix driving up his price

Why would he want to go back to that tirefire in Ottawa after presumably being on a good team for a playoff push once he's traded?
