komarov is not even close to an excellent 4th liner. he only looks decent because of how out of his depth he was playing as a shutdown guy. he's mediocre at best (even that I think is too high praise), and for a team loaded with wingers like the Leafs, he has no business being back
Agreed, he's really bad at hockey now.

Remember when Leaf Nation was all excited about Petri Kontiola joining the Leafs.

As far as players go Kontiola > Lindholm statistically speaking.

So this is a buyer beware situation as you don't really know what you get when you sign a previously undrafted 27 year old player with zero NA experience.

Lets hope Par Lindholm can replace Dominic Moore role of last year if all works out positively with this Euro UFA signing.

Imo Lindholm is just backup just-in-case Aaltonen/Gauthier don't make it out of pre-season. My expectation is that Aaltonen will make it, Lindholm will be on call-up, Gauthier will take a more offensive role in the AHL.

Well that's why first I said the new regime has a good track record and second that we would have to wait to see how he adjust.
I'm more than prepared that he won't make the team but that doesn't stop me from having a goof feeling about it

I listened to Dubas yesterday on TSN Overdrive. I basically fell asleep.

He said nothing and on that nothing he said nothing of interest. I am not looking forward to years of his pressers.

Some of you peeps might be interested to know that he did say: " recency bias".

Guhhhhhhhhh.....zzzzzzzzzzzzz...

He took over from Lou. That alone is an improvement. Ever hear Lou speak?

So he isn't giving anything away, that's awesome. His job isn't to entertain the masses, it's to build a winning franchise and keeping a lid on his intentions is a good idea and certainly can't hurt us. I don't look forward to pressers either and that's because I almost never watch them, mostly I just watch when the team plays hockey. ;)

I didn't expect "trade secrets" to be exposed.

I've seen / heard enough. Good luck Dubas.

So then do you want someone like Burke spewing things that wouldn't happen? Aka trading up for Tavares.

Cause a lot of posters didn't like that. I notice many posters hate the random spewing, but many posters hate when little is revealed.

So what do you guys want? Not sure if there is a Goldilocks option here.

"We potentially intend to maybe trade up for a player, who might be a forward, or might be a defenceman. I can't say his name, but it rhymes with Babares."

No. Stop involving me with extremes or idealistic conversations.

I think Babcock and Dubas would rather have a player that excels at a job then someone who's mediocre at everything. JVR is really good at what he's good at. And Babcock's usage of him was acceptable. Komarov is really good at his dimensions as well. Unfortunately, he was sometimes being used out of his element. In either case, I don't think Dubas is willing to over-pay for either.
And IMHO, that means JVR is gone. But I can see Dubas bring Komarov back for more money then some might think. Why? He's a leader. I would dare say he chirped Kadri more for missed defensive assignments then fans chirped Komarov's lack of offense. And if the Leafs miss out on UFA signings and put Nylander on center, I can even see Komarov being brought in and side-saddling him despite the lack of offensive production it might bring. Everything I see, the Leafs management and coaching have no problem taking a step back if it means future success. If they can teach and mentor Nylander to play both sides of the puck, they'll do it. Komarov was 8th among NHL forwards in hits, 76th in Takeaways, killed penalties, and can skate. These are attributes that separate good teams from great teams. As much as we might not like Komarov and/or Polak, the work they do which keeps them in the NHL is obtainable for all players. If they don't cost much, Dubas should re-sign these players just to set the bar. A more talented player can look at Polak's 2.4 hits and 1.6 blocked-shots per game and realize how much more he needs to do and where to raise the bar or become at best another Connor Carrick. Dubas isn't building a winner for this year, he'll be building another much needed developmental season.

If only for pure entertainment purposes, I love the fact that our management doesn't say anything. Watching the media struggle to come up with nonsense storylines, while management laughs and says "whatever man", is really doing it for me.

His Marlies year end interview was good. I find it amusing people expect him to tip his hand on contracts or trades. Lou was the most boring human alive, I could care less what he says, it’s what he does.

same people would complain about tipping his hand if he were to go in depth

Yeah, he’s definitely not going to give insight into his thinking to prevent others from figuring out what the Leafs will do (in part a likel lesson learned from the Lou era).

I even noticed he’s trying to dissuade the notion that he likes trading back at the draft (even though I strongly suspect he’s a huge fan of such a strategy), just to stop the focus on what he’s doing.

We have evidence of that from the 2015 draft. Remember it was Shanahan who put Dubas in charge of trying to acquire extra picks and in the 1st round the Leafs traded down from the 24th pick to the 29th pick, than they traded the 29th pick for the 34th pick of the 2nd round which they used to select Travis Dermott.

Oh I know he is, but he also made a recent comment in an interview about trying to lose that reputation for having a trade back bias at the draft.

Imo it’s just him trying to keep the press guessing and not tip his hand (even though when you actually look at the evidence you can sort of predict/guess what he may do)

It should also be mentioned the 2015 draft was a unique situation since Dubas and Hunter were co-interim GM's since Lamoriello had not yet been hired, so in any other year maybe things would have been different.

For people who are worried about Dubas trading based off the Kessel deal, there was this interesting excerpt from the Athletic Q&A with Justin Bourne (former Marlies video coach)

C C.

Based on what you know of Dubas, do you think he makes that Kessel trade again? Leafs are going to need to make some moves in the near future, and that one doesn't exactly inspire confidence...

Justin Bourne

@C C. Well, what's interesting with that trade is, they accomplished a few things. They wanted to suck that year, and if they keep Kessel, they probably don't get Auston Matthews. The other, is that Dubas didn't exactly have final say there. I know he didn't want to retain salary, and I also know they were offered a different package that he preferred. I wouldn't consider that a Dubas deal, necessarily, even though his voice was involved in the discussions

What a stupid question put forth by the interviewer. Does he not understand the context of that trade? Given everything, it's hard to imagine we were going to do much better than we did.

Does Dubas have to do something of "significance" over the draft weekend to establish himself, or can he just draft and go home?

Hopefully he does things that make sense and not things to make a name for himself.

there's the chance he's lying, but he has claimed that he doesn't want to do anything big for the sake of it. he wants the focus to be on the players and coaches rather than himself
