Maybe blame drafting then or their success in general meaning theyve had no high draft picks for now 17 years?

I went back 2 pages to 2007 and havent heard of 99% of these guys aka they didnt amount to anything. Guentzel/Rust/Jarry/Murray/Maata is about it for that long.

And obviously they chose not to pay Guentzel. This feels like a team similar to Wash waiting for the Crosby era to retire before trying again.

Another loss, against not a very good team, tonight. Not too sure which players Dubas can trade for a positive return but he’s definitely selling whatever he can. If Crosby waived his ntc (imo) Dubas would trade him too. And maybe that would be a good thing for Crosby?

Oh for sure they didn't draft amazingly and if they had drafted well, they wouldn't have needed to hire a new GM anyways. Guentzel is also an amazing steal, better than anything Dubas has EVER drafted. Its actually a lot harder ask to draft well with no high picks than Dubas just having to add good support players when you have ton of cap. But Dubas just wants to sign trash/re-sign trash.

Washington has 1 cup. The only time they made it out of a second round. Penguins have 4 cup appearances and 3 Stanley Cups with this core.

Washington could go the next 50 years without winning another 2 cups. Winning a cup is the hard part of the NHL. Not putting together a somewhat competent team.

Stop making it seem like the Penguins did jack shit while also getting to where they are today (pure suckage).

They went for it all, won it all multiple times, and now are dealing with the consequences.

It’s only the uneducated that sit here and actually expected some miracle to be done and this team to have already turned the corner and been competitive.

Their best players are all 35+ years old. It’s almost impossible.

How does Rust, a player that's never hit 60pts or 30g (or even 10pts in the playoffs), get a full NMC? I get hes better than that and just doesn't stay healthy for a full season, but still... modified NTC should've been the limit.

To answer your question, I have no clue.

But are NTC really that big of a deal in this situation? If they truly are tearing it all down, why would anyone want to stay? You would think almost all of them would jump at the chance to get out of the situation and go play competitive hockey.

I was originally talking about this year only.

It was you that brought up history and proceeded to ignore the fact that Washington has also won.

It's not like Washington is an overly young team either.

Granted they have more younger guys than, most teams do.

But Ovechkin is 39, Carlson is mid 30's they have their older guys too.

The issue is that the player is 100% in control. If they only want to play for one team, Pittsburgh can only negotiate for a trade with that team.

I looked it up though and I guess Rust's NTC expires after this year so if he's limiting his trade options they just need to hope he has a good year and then move him in the offseason. Not a big issue for Pittsburgh, but I feel full NTCs should be limited to players that sign cheap 1-2yr retirement deals and superstars.

Modified NTCs for non superstars? Sure, but that should pretty much be it.

I think part of it is that Hextall was just a bad GM, but Hextall did structure Rust's deal so he'd be pretty easily moveable after this year. Having a full NMC for the first 3 years sucks, but I'd rather have that and no trade restrictions beyond that than a 15 team NTC for the entirety of it.

I think it's very likely at least one of Rust or Karlsson is moved for futures next off-season. I'd probably bet on Karlsson tbh, the Penguins have Brunicke stepping up as what seems like a top RD prospect and the money owed to Karlsson plummets after his July signing bonus.

Could see a Bunting reunion with Toronto if Pittsburgh would retain on him. Rakell would be a nice piece to add as well if he wasn't making 5m for the next 4 years, too steep for Toronto. Toronto is in desperate need for middle 6 scoring, ideally on the 3rd line.

It is you ignoring the facts that Washington has not gone for it as much as the Penguins (trading away draft picks). Also the Caps had two aging expensive players go on LTIR.

Almost $15 million freed up to replace two 30+ year old players with whoever they wanted.

And my comment is in respect to yours saying Washington is in a MUCH better state today. Well no shit, they had more resources, traded better and got some luck on top of it.

But do you think any Penguins fan cares if Washington is in a better spot? No, because we won 3x as many cups as they did.

And like I said, they can have decent teams for the next century and potentially not make up the cups.

The cups are great and we can celebrate them forever but largely irrelevant at this point. Washington has been much better managed than the Pens in the 2020s. That's why they're still competitive and the penguins aren't.
