I bet you he starts playing well now. Change of scenery/pretty talented line mates/given a honest opportunity/playing for money...

If the Bruins make the playoffs, you pay the 4th and call it a win...there's upside here...there's no upside in Hayes...

Addressing Hayes is a big move. He's a total anchor.

I've watched all the Jets games and I've hated his game. Can't remember any good plays he's made this season.
I said few months ago the end up with Stafford and nothing else, well it happened :(

BB88 in negativity shocker!

Stafford is just fine as a 3rd line fill-in for the price. Sweeney didn't sell the farm for a stop-gap solution, but did something for cheap that could pay dividends. A-OK with me. From what I've seen Stafford is a helluva lot more active on the ice than Hayes, is a better skater and at least brings a modicum of energy. And has a decent shot, or at least used to have. Could've a good fit.

But of course he's absolute crap since this FO can't do anything right. Or something like that.

I actually think Stafford would be a better fit than Backes on that first line.

Adding a RW gives you options. It makes sense. People have been thinking about RW around here for a while...good to know logic works.

I don't think they'll go there. But it's an option. If Stafford shows ability, I agree that the fit seems better. Options.

With Stafford the Bruins have 24 on their NHL roster.

Who is getting demoted or waived?

Quick stat comparison:
Stafford has been averaging about 1 minute more per game at 5vs5 than Jimmy Hayes. He's also averaged .273 primary points per game to Hayes' .143. Stafford should be a better possession player than Hayes as well.

THIS^^ Here

is a clip from 2011?

I'm just very glad that the Canadiens didn't take him and they meet us in the playoffs and he becomes re-born and kills us!
Afterall he is/was a Bruins killer.
Good, cheap move will hopefully push Hayes out of the lineup!

Well, now we can focus on who's going to leave college and sign. I'm hoping for JFK, McAvoy, and Bjork but I know that's way too much to expect.

Zach Leach take on the acquisition.

"After watching all of their Atlantic Division rivals add pieces this week, Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney was able to stay true to his goal of not overpaying this deadline, as he did last year, but still added some quality depth by bringing in Winnipeg Jets winger Drew Stafford for a conditional sixth-round pick. There is no word yet on what the conditions are that are attached to the pick."

"Stafford is having the worst season of his NHL career, yes. However, that is also due in part to only playing in 40 games due to injury. Stafford is just one year removed from a 38-point season and scored 40 points or more four times earlier in his career. The Bruins are certainly familiar with his body of work with the rival Buffalo Sabres and were able to bring the scoring winger in at a very low cost. Boston has been rolling lately with a 7-1 record under new head coach Bruce Cassidy, but rookie winger Peter Cehlarik and streaky Jimmy Hayes have also been playing in top-nine roles nearly every night. If Sweeney had gone through the deadline without adding any additional depth to banged-up Matt Beleskey, he would have been risking the Bruins’ good momentum falling apart if either Cehlarik’s or Hayes’ play fell off. Stafford adds some excellent insurance for Boston down the stretch, as they look to return to the postseason for the first time in three years."

So as someone who's been very frustrated by Stafford's play this season, let me give a brief description:

First of all, he's not good defensively at all and wasn't even when he was producing. He's really clueless in the defensive zone and has poor defensive effort levels. This is even more of a weakness this season.

Second, he's not been very good offensively at all, despite getting a lot of PP time and quite a bit of ice time in the top 6 of Jets, either. The play seems to die on his stick more often than not. However, at his best he was a functional, solid scorer although he was really streaky. Basically, as a player he's negative impact when you remove his scoring.

If he does regain his decent ~20+20 form he's a valuable top 6 guy but if not, he's a liability.

Of course, the cost was very minor and it is possible that a player like Bergeron might compensate for his complete inability to play defense. Hopefully he gets it going. He doesn't seem like a bad person.

And certainly, if he was brought in as a Jimmy Hayes replacement, he likely is much better even if he doesn't improve / regain his form at all.

Since when? I thought that was only for playoffs

Both are bad possession players, but Stafford is worse. He has one of the worst CF% Rel team the last 3 years.
