Which player are you referencing here?

Thats your opinion and thats fine....we are still really talking about 1 elevated season. If Draisaitl had another 50 point season it would change the perspective around this completely. Thats why this really is all about this past season.
So if 1 great season was enough for you to form that opinion then thats fine too.
I am saying that for me I need more information. I need to see a player step up for a couple of seasons...I need a bigger sample size. That is especially true when you factor in that he plays with the best player on the planet. ]
That matters and matters a lot.

That was Klefbom and the team made a bet that worked out. (So far). You don't get the benefit of that situation and signing him to a 1-2 year deal. I think he is a better player that Johansen. Draisaitl showed in the playoffs (agree on the small sample size) that he could be the driver. Does the fact that Toews doesn't drive offense like Kane does bother them?

I am not even saying it isn't an overpayment. Maybe $750K to $1M possibly. Does that mean we have to be frugal on the bottom two lines and pairing? For sure. Does it make me upset that we signed Draisaitl long term? No.

Source?

And powerball numbers from the future while you're at it, please.

Uff, sorry mate, I am not up for those arguments today (especially in this thread where it will disappear amongst the rest).

I can PM you in a couple of days if you like with the reason/argument

4th biggest AAV coming off an ELC in NHL history

Crosby, Malkin, McDavid, Draisaitl

but this is what it costs to keep players now. its just reality.

As mentioned RNH is gonzo, Maroon too (but I think that was always the plan) Letestu prob gone as well

I cant understand why you cant understand that. :D

That million has to come from somewhere and it has to be done for 8 years.
Like SK13 has posted...there are implications with this that will reverberate through the makeup of the team.

RNH is as good as gone.

People that think the cap will just continue to go up should have no problem buying real estate at its peak. Nothing just keeps going up year after year....I expect that to be true with the cap as well.

Do you think if this was a $7.5 million deal it would make Nugent-Hopkins more likely to be kept?

4th biggest for NOW, Eichel will pass that, Matthews will pass that, other guys will come along and pass that number with ease. It's the nature of the increasing cap.

he had a 16.9 shooting% this year, while spending most of his time on the wing of the best passer in a generation.... yeah, i actually think there is a pretty darn good chance that he doesn't surpass 29 goals again

Spends all season downplaying McDavid.

Calls him best passer in a generation when it's convenient in an attempt to argue against Draisaitl contract

Do you ever stay consistent? Or just consistently negative?

Draisaitl just said in a german interview that he hopes to play on a line with McDavid next season.

Have you ever thought about going to another team?
No never. Since I've been to Edmonton, I feel puddle. Also in my first real NHL season, when we missed the playoffs and I have been playing live in the AHL, it was clear to me that I want to stay an oiler. My team mates and I always knew about the potential of the team. Edmonton is a total hockey city, we have fantastic fans and a very professionally managed organization. Anyone who has seen a playoff game in our new arena will not forget it all his life.

Your team mate Connor McDavid and you are considered the probably best storm duo of the entire league. Did you already have contact with him?

(Laughing). We always keep in touch, we are also good friends. It's great, of course, if you can play with such a strong player as Connor. I hope the coach will put us together again next season. We are in harmony with each other. But this remains to be seen.

Fair enough, I'm personally confident Draisaitl will be comfortably be worth the money.

I think it was December last year when Draisaitl has his awakening, where he realized he was good enough to impose his will on the game with effort. We'll likely see player improve from last season.

He looked kind of chubby drinking his beer there. ;)

He better be training hard. Is he?

I'm certainly less than enthused about the AAV, as he has not definitely proven he can anchor any NHL line by himself, against the best / top checking lines of other teams. Also agreed that this likely spells the end of Nuge here.

Chiarelli cannot go trading 1st round picks in search of one year cup push runs, as this will now necessitate the pushing up of relatively cheap prospects to take on roles throughout the lower half of the lineup.

I don't know... just not convinced Draisaitl has earned his keep to the tune of $8.5 million a year.

As for those who discount Draisaitl's performance solely as being on McDavid's wing, how quickly we forget that for most of December, and certainly the early and middle part of it, McDavid was slumping (by his lofty standards) and Drai was clearly the driving force on that line.

McDavid was slumping by anybody's standards in December (1-5-6 in 14 games at even strength, with 0 even strength points at home).

That's why Drai was put on that line in January.

Can't deny the chemistry or its importance to success.

yup, those boys in TO are going to make a ******** of money

I really wonder where Nylander and Marner end up, because Matthews will get paid, for sure, but those two will be interest.

Also, Laine will have a bigger Cap hit then Draisaitl as well I would think.

Jesus, he'll never score more than 29 goals as a 21 year old who still has a long career ahead of him as he continues to mature and get better in the league. You're sure pretty awful at betting.

All the while getting to play with McDavid or be sheltered by McDavid.

Everytime I see them training... I think like a mother and see the dangers. :) Like if that 50 lb medicine ball comes down from the ceiling the wrong way and hits him on the head/neck... just seems a risky training method.

Love Drai. Glad he is signed for 8 years.

I really thought he would sign for 7.5. I think Kunetsov and Johansen contracts bumped his up. I would rather have Drai than Kunetsov or Johansen.

Chiarelli will have to be shrewd in the next few years to manage the cap. He will be in tough.

that's why the (to me) overpay has me so worried.
I've seen nothing that suggests Chia is able to manage a salary cap. I have no confidence he can do so.

maybe he's learned from his time in boston. we'll see.

Matthews will bolt back to Arizona

What I noticed is how close the teammates are with each other. Guys like Nurse and Gryba are jokingly chirping one another with their fitness training videos on twitter.

All the while getting to play with McDavid or be sheltered by McDavid.

Yep, he'll never score more than 29 ever again. All because McJaded says so..:laugh:
