I agree. Again, I'm not sure if that IS the deciding factor, but I know even in my 30s now, if I was told to go to Russia for a year and work hard enough for the chance to increase my earnings exponentially, get my own place and depend on one or two people to translate for me, I'd be scared ****less. I can only imagine how difficult of a decision that is for an 18 year-old.

Name one russian that became a star out of CHL

How many Russian stars derailed their career in the CHL? That was the claim.

Plus as far as I remember it wasn't even a realistic option until fairly recently.

Kabanov is one, but actually my claim is that nobody from top russian talent that went CHL route became a star in the NHL. Not only that, most of them are busts.

I literally can't think of any more either. I was genuinely asking. It just seems like an immensely small sample size more than anything.

It is small sample size but there was some notable Russian players that went to CHL only to bust. I'd have to do research for the names which I can't do right now but Russian players have generally had better success staying in Russia than CHL.

Yak has a chance. He would be a much better player had he not gone to the Oilers and went to a team that actually develops players.

Didn't Yachmenev play in NA juniors?

For whatever reason it just rarely works out. I think that's why so few do it.

He didn't bust because of the CHL. The problem was clear mental issues (combined with unspecified off-ice issues leading to disciplinary action from every team he's ever been on and even being kept off the Russian WJC teams).

As for the rest. Not sure why by some chance Russians wouldn't gain from the CHL. Shouldn't be all that different. It's not like the MHL is filled with opportunity these days. What with financial crisis and limited facilities.

Grigorenko is another one

Great news. Alexander Dergachyov want to leave Russia after this season and move to NA.

Futa: "He plays the Kings way, and our development guys haven’t really even gotten a hold of him. He’s very similar to the way Dwight King plays the game as far as a big body, skates well. He’s only going to get better that way just being over here and working on the North American game. But his net-front presence, it kind of summed it up on that goal that [Russia] tied it up late [in the gold-medal game]. The goalie just couldn’t see anything. Provorov got the puck through, but it was like a wall in front of the net. He’s working on his English, and it was really good. Sharpy’s a little different. Sharpy already plays over here in Owen Sound. He’s already got the language down, but Dergy’s working on it. He’ll be here next year, 100%. He’ll probably be in Ontario, but he’s already made that commitment that we’ll get him signed as soon as his KHL contract runs out at the end of the year".

Good choise. He won't see much playing time in his current team (SKA) and his style of play much better suited for AHL and NHL (hope in the future)

#SKA is going to offer Alexander Dergachyov 3 year deal, team's VP says they want to keep him as well as Pavel Buchnevich #LAKings #NYR #KHL

I didn't realize Sharpie was so fluent in English.

And you can never have too much banjo.

Well he's played in the OHL for a few years now. I never knew how good his English was either but when you move overseas as a teenager you have moreincentive to pick up the language.

Why do they want to keep him for another three years when he averages 5 minutes/game?

That was my first thought
