Heres the list of comparables for Coles production, because thats what he is, production. Whos core in there? Rakell? Debrincat? Larkin for sure. Tuch? Old man Kadri?

Theres more than just PPGs, theres playstyle and position and age that come into play. In Caufields case, what does he bring if not production? Thus, hes judged on production.

Okay his two way game has progressed from the gutter to NHL average, that doesnt make it a strength.

Is it not liking a player to say that a guy that got 70 points, has severe size limitations and isnt good defensively isnt a core player? Every team has Caufield in a different font. Ehlers, Debrincat, Terry, Peterka, Huberdeau, etc. None of them are core players.

To be a core player you need to be a 1C, 1D, 1W, 1G.

Considering the possible outcomes, the Habs had the best outcome of ALL Atlantic Division teams.

Boston = moved down 2 spots (worst possible outcome)
Buffalo = moved down 2 spots (worst possible outcome)

Detroit = moved down 1 spot (worst possible "reasonable" outcome)*

Montreal = kept their #16 pick from Calgary (best possible outcome)**

Ottawa, Toronto, Tampa Bay, Florida = all of them (along with Montreal) would be glad to see what happened to Boston, Buffalo and Detroit, but unlike Montreal all would have hoped that Calgary would win one of the 2 lottery picks and jump to #6 so that the Habs would get the pick Florida traded to Calgary.

*Detroit could have dropped 2 spots but the chance of 2 of the 4 teams after them winning the 2 lottery draws was insignificant, something like 0.3%.

** The only thing possible that would have made the lottery better for Montreal would have been if a Western Conference team with one of the later picks (Anaheim or Vancouver) would have won the 1st lottery instead of the Islanders, but all teams in the Atlantic share that benefit.

What if the Habs didn't start the season with a 4-9-2 record? What if they didn't blow a game late against Columbus? What if they didnt blow a 2 goal 3rd period lead in Seattle? What if they didn't blow a 3-0 lead to Toronto?

The issue for me is not the AAV of $8.7M. Two years is not "tying up". We did the exact same for Patrik Laine.

My problem is giving up both first round picks for a single two year rental.

Bring down the acquisition cost and we can talk.

36 guys had as many or more points as games played (point per game).

Guys like Kaprizov, Matthews, Thomas, Ovechkin, J. Hughes, Q. Hughes, M. Tkachuk, Barkov, etc. didn't hit 82 points, but were safely P/GP players.

That can step in next year? Misa at 1OA/2OA. So I'd say, realistically, no.

Frondell, Desnoyers, O'Brien, and Martin all project well as top-6 centers but are likely out of our range without moving up. McQueen is massive and skilled but I think the number of significant back injuries he's had puts a damper on how confident most would be picking him. I'd estimate around ~3 years as a very optimistic projection for the potential of seeing any of these guys as effective, every game 2Cs.

No way I say no to Crosby but that depends on the price. If they want a grade A like Reinbacher or Hage, I pass. The offers are more likely to be both our 1st rounders (16/17) and a prospect like Beck or Kapanen or Mailloux. Anything deeper than that, I pass. That's my line.

Crosby would fit this roster very well IMO. Imagine Demidov with Crosby bud? You don't think Crosby helps the development and leadership on our team? I'd rethink that one.

Any center drafted in this draft at 16/17 is likely 5 years away from being able to provide impact in the NHL. If we are lucky, Hage reaches it sooner as it was a deeper draft last year.
