HF Habs: Draft Lottery tonight!! 7 p.m. ET. (MTL with #16 and #17!!)

San Jose is stacked at forward. If Isles pick Schaefer....who do they select? Celebrini and Smith are fine 1 and 2 Cs. Misa and Hagens move to Wing? Do they picm Martone? There could be some movement at the draft.
Theyre stacked at D but they need size and a C. Misa or Martone fits perfectly.

They can add defenders with later picks.

Boston moving back two picks is amazing. They're practically guaranteed to miss the guys who might be in the NHL next season as a result. Hopefully another bad year makes Pasta or McAvoy request a trade.

But then again their roster isn't bad enough to finish this low again, so hopefully they pull another Zach Hamill out of their ass. McAvoy, Pasta and Swayman being healthy and not holding out for contracts shouldn't let them finish last in the east.

I'm sure we'll hear complaints from small sections of our fanbase that we took the Isles playoff spot so we could have won the lottery too. No, that's not how it works. Just don't waste the mental effort to stretch the truth and jump to conclusions on this one.

Who are we praying to fall to us at this point, assuming we don't deal these picks? Who are the mega homerun swings with question marks like Tarasenko, Erik Karlsson, JT Miller, Larkin, Radulov, Barzal, Tom Wilson, Hertl, Teravainen, Chabot, Connor, Tuch, etc. I feel like there's way more hits at that 15-17 range than there are in that 5-9 range, perhaps because people are trying to pick safe?

Like #5 has such an absurd number of recent busts. Only Pettersson really matched draft hype. Carey Price is the only HOF-level #5 talent other than Stevens, Jagr and Demidov. Wheeler and Vanek are legit two of the top 10 guys picked 5th of all time.

#6 is better, but doesn't have that "elite player" factor between Peter Forsberg and Matthew Tkachuk.

Seems like #1 is the only spot you're really guaranteed a player. Sometimes they're not great but few #1's straight up just don't become NHLers. Lowest GP for a #1 skater is Gord Kluzak at 299 games, retired early due to knee injuries. Probably would have been a great if he had modern science behind his recovery. Basically just Yakupov, who was a top 6 forward at 18 years old. Thinking Edmonton had nothing to do with him busting is wrong; he's finally breaking out in the KHL after years of injury and irrelevancy. In pace just behind Rape Boucher on OMSK.

Anyways, who we got? Who has that elite potential in the 16-17 range? Not just fallers, but guys you can grab early. I'd hate to grab a Beaulieu to miss Kucherov again. Back to back picks means a little more flexibility to grab the two guys we want most. I don't want any safe picks, we have plenty of safe players and safe prospects. Is it worth trading back in this draft? Or do the homeruns in this range suck bad enough it is better to just trade for a developed player?

I offer SJ Slaf, Reinbacher and pick 17 for 2OA.

No way lol. Slaf already prove that he is going to be a beast in this league, I wouldn't trade Slaf for the 2nd alone... Reinbacher will be a stud aswell. This trade make no sense for the Habs.

Looks Leo Carlsson and Adam Fantilli... they are both 2nd and 3rd in a better draft than 2025 and Slafkovsky isn't far behind, even he show more potential than both (maybe Fantilli now show more with his 2nd season), but they are close all 3 to me. Slafkovsky will be a special player, for sure.

A really quick mock.

1. NYI: Misa
2. SJS: Schaefer
3. CHI: Martone
4. Utah: Frondell
5. Nashville: Desnoyers
6. Philadelphia: Hagens
7. Boston: O'Brien
8. Seattle: Mrtka
9. Buffalo: Martin
10. Anaheim: Bear
11. Pittsburgh: Smith
12. NYR: McQueen
13. Detroit: Eklund
14. Columbus: Ravensbergen
15. Vancouver: Cootes
16. Montreal: Lakovic
Might as well add #17 in too (Spence!) I don't see Boston passing up massive RHD Mrtka, and claiming he's Chara 2.0 though

Damm, now I would like to miss playoffs the way the Isles did and pick 1st. Is it me or something has been wrong with the thing this year?

I really don’t see Hagens going 1st overall. If Islanders take a center, it's Misa.
Are there any potential fallers for whom the Habs should be trying to move up for, by packaging both their 16-17th picks? For instance, Martin if he slips say to 10-12th?

HuGo, make it happen!

So we should trade Slaf, Reinbacher and our 1st Round pick (#17) to San Jose for their 2OA (Misa?). Just trying to get this right…

You’re applying the principle of the team that gets the best player wins the trade. You see this as an unassailable principle suffering no caveats or at the very least this is a clear-cut application of the principle like the Roy vs Avs deal.

While Misa is not the best player in the deal yet because he’s 18 and will play Juniors next season, it’s a strong draft at the very top and Misa has little question marks, there is basically no gamble involved. So Misa’s de facto the best player in the deal.

And despite the fact we’re a playoff team and in no way rebuilding and Misa is returning to the minors, we can overcome the loss of Slafkovsky and Reinbacher for the next 3 playoffs because we have assets to replace them and it will barely slow us down if at all, in our fight for the Cup. And because we’re talking about Misa, our 1st Round Pick (#17) can be thrown in for good measure.

Am I close to your thinking?

That's crazy that both #10 and #14 spots moved up. Why the f*** doesn't this ever happen for Montreal?!

It’s good this wasn’t the results last year or else Montreal would have dropped from 5 to 7 and would have had no chance at selecting Demidov.

The Habs have actually done well in the last three drafts to stay where they were picking pre-lottery. At 5 there is a 58.2% chance the team will pick worse and at 1 there is a 74.5% chance the team will pick worse.

My two potential Habs first round picks:

Jack Nesbitt:

If Jack Nesbitt makes it to where we pick, and we still have one or both of our picks, I feel like he’s pretty much a lock to be taken.

Big center (6’4, 185 lbs) that obviously needs to fill out his frame with some more muscle, Nesbitt still plays a very physical game. Terrific hand eye coordination makes him an excellent net front presence. He muscles his way into the tough areas and can’t be muscled out and excels at tipping pucks… he’s a solid skater, good on draws and defensively responsible, while playing physical and not afraid to drop the gloves and stand up for his teammates (or play a little dirty himself). I’ll be surprised if someone doesn’t take him before he gets to Montreal, but I see a diamond in the rough player potential here.

Justin Carbonneau:

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen the name Carbonneau on the back of a Habs jersey, but the potential to grab one of the best goal scorers in the draft could fall right to the Habs in their own back yard. Carbonneau is a solid right winger, standing 6’1 and weighing 192 lbs. A terrific skater, Carbonneau isn’t a wallflower who’s sitting waiting for an opportunity, he goes hard to the dirty areas and comes out with the puck. He plays a hard nosed game but also has a bullet of a shot with great accuracy. I’d say he’s the second best right winger in this draft after Martone, and I don’t think he’s that far behind him. He plays a solid all around game but will have to work on his defensive skills a bit (although I think he’s pretty solid in that department). With his skill set and ability to drive a line, I wouldn’t be surprised if Carbonneau emerges as one of the better scorers in this draft. I see a ton of potential in this young man. The fact that he’s a Quebecois is icing on the cake, I’d like him if he came from Antarctica. This is a character kid that has the potential to be a very good player if he keeps working hard and progressing. I think he’d complement our future lineup nicely.

Hard to know now. It's all over the place. I know Montreal seems to like Desnoyers, but he's expected to go top 7, maybe top 5.

We will get two good players out of this draft, if we don't trade the picks (I don't think we trade them). Two of Bear, Reschny, Hensler, Aitcheson, and Spence are going to be with us. I don't think Carbonneau and Lakovic are high on our list.

From my perspective we’ve identified the core players ( Suzuki Caufield Slafkovsky Demidov Hutson Guhle Reinbacher)

Now we need to surround them with role players. I’m talking about gritty playoff players.

I’m open to trading all our draft picks.
