Boston moving back two picks is amazing. They're practically guaranteed to miss the guys who might be in the NHL next season as a result. Hopefully another bad year makes Pasta or McAvoy request a trade.
But then again their roster isn't bad enough to finish this low again, so hopefully they pull another Zach Hamill out of their ass. McAvoy, Pasta and Swayman being healthy and not holding out for contracts shouldn't let them finish last in the east.
I'm sure we'll hear complaints from small sections of our fanbase that we took the Isles playoff spot so we could have won the lottery too. No, that's not how it works. Just don't waste the mental effort to stretch the truth and jump to conclusions on this one.
Who are we praying to fall to us at this point, assuming we don't deal these picks? Who are the mega homerun swings with question marks like Tarasenko, Erik Karlsson, JT Miller, Larkin, Radulov, Barzal, Tom Wilson, Hertl, Teravainen, Chabot, Connor, Tuch, etc. I feel like there's way more hits at that 15-17 range than there are in that 5-9 range, perhaps because people are trying to pick safe?
Like #5 has such an absurd number of recent busts. Only Pettersson really matched draft hype. Carey Price is the only HOF-level #5 talent other than Stevens, Jagr and Demidov. Wheeler and Vanek are legit two of the top 10 guys picked 5th of all time.
#6 is better, but doesn't have that "elite player" factor between Peter Forsberg and Matthew Tkachuk.
Seems like #1 is the only spot you're really guaranteed a player. Sometimes they're not great but few #1's straight up just don't become NHLers. Lowest GP for a #1 skater is Gord Kluzak at 299 games, retired early due to knee injuries. Probably would have been a great if he had modern science behind his recovery. Basically just Yakupov, who was a top 6 forward at 18 years old. Thinking Edmonton had nothing to do with him busting is wrong; he's finally breaking out in the KHL after years of injury and irrelevancy. In pace just behind Rape Boucher on OMSK.
Anyways, who we got? Who has that elite potential in the 16-17 range? Not just fallers, but guys you can grab early. I'd hate to grab a Beaulieu to miss Kucherov again. Back to back picks means a little more flexibility to grab the two guys we want most. I don't want any safe picks, we have plenty of safe players and safe prospects. Is it worth trading back in this draft? Or do the homeruns in this range suck bad enough it is better to just trade for a developed player?
