You have to go for the best player available

No matter what forward they pick he’s in best case scenario 2-3 years away from being a legit top line player

If you go for the best available player he’ll always carry more value in a trade, if let’s say a trade opportunity becomes available, or picking up a franchise prospect/player allows you to trade other assets to land those other players. & lastly you ofcourse want to surround your team with the best players possible

We all know the example from 10 years ago far too well, Kotkaniemi example has also been brought up here as well, what can happen when you reach for a need

Which player is more valuable, Kotkaniemi or Tkachuk, which player holds more trade value?

You don’t draft for need, you draft the player you think will be the best

I guess i just dont really believe in schaefer then. Im not really a huge believer in anyone specifically in this draft so far. I think the top 5-8 guys in this draft have a legitimate shot at being the best player from it, so with that in mind i pick the one that plays a position i need.

Yeah I mean it really doesn’t. Of course it could always happen this year but history as a guide says no.
Just thinking that after the top two there seems to be a bunch of kids lumped in, so why not trade back if your guy will be there and gain another pick or prospect.

Yes it may or never happens but maybe this year it will.

They can help on the wing,

We don't need someone with a well-rounded, responsible three zone game. We need someone with explosive scoring and playmaking ability, high end skill and speed. Every player doesn't have to be a plus defensive player. At the top of the draft, I want the highest offensive ceiling player we can get. Those are the players who always go high in the draft, and who we haven't been able to draft because we don't pick high enough.

So do we hold it against a player because he plays a well rounded responsible game?

Do we ignore Desnoyers simply because I will never be able to properly pronounce his name. :naughty: I mean do we ignore him because he plays a responsible 200 foot game, despite the fact he's one of the best offensive players in the draft.

Like I look at what Desnoyers has actually done on the ice, and McQueen has never come close to producing at the same level, yet people talk about an elite ceiling for him Just because he is 3 inches taller.

Eklund of course is the non center who is the most explosive player and he is 161 pounds.

I have no idea what I did to deserve this about Desnoyers I haven’t said a single negative thing about him.

The point is that I’m not prioritizing a three zone center. My priority is offense, as much as I can get. High end offense is the hardest thing to acquire in the NHL.

I’m going into the center pool deeper before I take a wing than most people. I’ll do the deeper work if we’re in that position, but if I think Frondell gives me more offensively than Desnoyers I tend to go that way. And I’m not sure I’d take Martone or Eklund even at 7.

Sweeney last night basically says this - we have all these pass first centers we need guys that shoot

Lot of folks high on Frondell

Just going by the YouTube clips I’ve seen of all the top draft picks, Frondell intrigued me the most.

Granted Ive no experience other than being a fan, but I think Frondell looked damn good.
