Merkley really a Ranger target?

He was suspended by longtime Sather friend George Burnett. Can anyone envision Burnett giving a glowing review to his longtgime pal and old boss?
i dont see why not, ADA has been suspended multiple times as a young kid

merkley is 17 for gods sake, we are having the deangelo conversation all over again

Rangers talk about character all the time, David Quinn came in and talked about character right off the bat. They've all talked about building a core of prospects to build around.

Again tell me the conversation that Burnett has with sather and Gorton about this kid, I'm sure they're going to ask and I'm sure he's going to tell them exactly what happened.

Yeah, I don't see Merkley even on the Rangers' radar
Especially since, to date, ADA has not exactly set the world on fire...

I probably wouldn't touch Merkley until our 48th pick unless we're convinced there are no other top 4 Ds or top 9 Fs. I love his skill and his skating agility. And his ability to get his shot through from the point. His skillset is rare. But if his on-ice issues effect his ability to be coached I would avoid. There's just too much learning and growing required to go from juniors to reliable NHL top 4 D-man. Could he be a bottom pairing PPQB specialist? I bet. But at what point should an organization that's rebuilding use a pick on someone like that? In a deep draft no less. You have to believe he can be coached. That he will dedicate himself to the details, off-ice training, film-work. If NYR brass is confident about that after their evals then maybe it's a better bet. Otherwise, I would be using 9,26,28,39 on kids we have more confidence in building around. Or bundling 2 of those picks and a vet to get a 2nd top 10 pick.

I agree. Wahlstrom is so talented, it would really take a lot for him to completely bust.

It's really a question of just how good he can be. From a ceiling standpoint, his hands are good enough to score 35-40 goals. Do the other components come together to get to that level? That's more of the question for me.

I've heard some guys say if there's any player in this draft that can score 50... Ollie Wallie is that guy.

I don't think goal scoring upside like that falls too far in the draft, but the trend of the NHL draft becoming more like an NFL draft is more present than ever. By that, I mean teams going positional with cost control and organizational need.

I know we've posted about a bunch, but some teams value positional need above others. Kotkaniemi... being that being center... and Hayton being that two way guy that can turn into a top 6 shutdown option or a 3rd line shutdown option is going to alter things...

But Wahlstrom... that's a steal at 9. An absolutely steal to get a guy that is a very safe bet for a 25-30 goal output.

Yeah if they take Wilde I'd rather he go to the AHL

Curious why he backed out of NCAA

With Lindgren, Hajek, Day, Crawley, Sproul, Gilmour and possibly Pionk, O'Gara, Zborovskiy & Bigras already down there, it'd be bad news if he ended up on the 3rd AHL pairing or ECHL at age 18.

Rather take K. Miller or Tychonick, those guys are playing on/going to good programs and should marinate.

I, on the other hand, would prefer he go to college or junior for a year. He’s just a kid. His whole persona needs development.
To clarify, I would much rather he be in college, but since he isn’t, I’d like to see him in the AHL than juniors.

Is the USHL an option for him?

I think 50 is tough — depending on the direction of the game and the league.

But you put Wahlstrom on a line with McDavid, and they click? I think the potential is there to come awfully close.

Yeah, I would say Zadina/Tkachuk myself

Mayyyyybe Hughes

I think it also depends on who is available at 7. If Zadina and Hughes are available at 7, no reason to move really if they feel one of those guys is there at 9. The push will come if only one of those guys is there. I’m doubtful it will only be one of Hughes, Tkachuk or Zadina left after the first 6 picks.

Based on what I’m reading:
Dahlin
Svechnikov
Kotkaniemi

So that means out of the next 3 only one of those guys can be taken. So Hayton, Boqvist, Dobson, Bouchard, Kravtsov, Wahlstrom need to be 2 or 3 of the number 4-6 picks.

Should try to get #10 from EDM and go back-to-back before the Islanders do. There is going to be some nice talent there. Would like to get in on that.

Would anyone be OK w/ swapping picks with Vancouver at 7 for a second rounder?

Maybe for the Devils 2nd rounder. No way for the 39 unless Zadina is there.

NYR spent #49 to move from 16 to 12 in 2005. That has to be comparable to a 9-to-7 trade.
