I know the Canes didn't think he fit, but Roy is definitely a 3C and maybe even a second-line C or winger. He played well at RW with Karlsson—who by the way is the "weakness" since he isn't really a 1C. I would argue VGK is fine after 1C. Sure they don't have Malkin or Point, but that can't realistically be the bar.
Look at Tampa, instead of trading for Duchene or ROR in the past 2 seasons, they trusted Point and Cirelli to develop. That is the thing about young players, they get better.

I'm guessing the trade market for Johnson was pretty weak. Think he would still choose where he went if he had a few options instead of being at the mercy of waivers.

Career worst year for TJ last year still had 31 pts in 65 games. Only 14:33 per game.
The issue is the 4 years left. If he really is in decline and not just off a bad year, 4 years is a long time to pay for the mistake of claiming him.

Yeah but if he had a say 2-3 teams interested, I would rather choose from one of those than potentially going somewhere unknown and unwanted. But I'm saying maybe he didn't actually have any options at all.
