for Carbonneau it seems the biggest negative is that he tries to do too much and won't be able to force things as much at the NHL level. But I think those are easily coachable issues, and by virtue of having NHL linemates he's simply not going to be a puckhog. I can't imagine him being so clueless as to not use his linemates. I admit I didn't know much about him until recently, but Carbonneau's potential and how he would fit into our team is very enticing.

I don’t think his potential is all that high. His skating isn’t great and he already is NHL size. I don’t see a lot of room for growth in his game. Add in the selfishness/IQ issues, there are better options.

It’s a nice measuring stick but after the 5th pick or so, things get out of whack.

Players drop and players jump, this happens every year.

Carb is heading the NCAA route so this should be great for his development and Lacks is a 6’4 talent with tons of potential….won’t turn into Lindros but could turn into a Nichushkin.

There are too many posters who have these ridiculous zero sum opinions on prospects. It seems as though the same posters every year come out with their polarized opinions on prospects where they identify their favourites and defend them at a delusional level and also identify the players that they seem to hate and entirely write them off. They won't acknowledge any flaws in the deity that they are worshipping from the pulpit nor will they acknowledge any good in the demons that they scorn from the same pulpit.

All of these kids have a chance, which is why they get drafted. All prospects drafted in the first round must be perceived as having the potential to be legitimate NHLers. When posters do not acknowledge this and resort to hyperbolic dismissals it drags the conversation into tribal mud slinging and more people need to call this delusional behaviour out.

Selfishness is probably a common trait among hockey players with a top-level shot, and Carbonneau seems to have a good one. That particular wart I can live with, depending on whether he is coachable and will work on his weaknesses.

Not sure, he stopped himself and was like im not gonna talk about a kid like that. So probably just some personality stuff, but likely maturity things he will grow out of.

Regardless the noise is mostly that they dont seem that intrigued by the player. So I wouldnt be surprised if we did pass. RDS and TVA are gonna be so f***ing mad tho so its almost worth it.

You know, that’s actually a fair comparable. I’d say Beck was better defensively at the same age but Cootes might have an edge offensively. Both have high compete levels and would probably be interchangeable in a middle six role.

I'd take another Beck in the system personally. It think he's going to be a useful player; he just needs some time to figure out the next step.

It also can be a dead give away that the team is going to make many selections.

I agree that teams with lots of picks are more likely to make trades but most of those tend to be trying to move up or trying to spread some of the wealth into next seasons picks and not necessarily for players on NHL contracts.

Beck is more powerful (Skating, shot, strength) while Cootes has better puck skills and is a little more creative. Both are character players who work hard and don't take shifts off and both project as middle six swiss army knife types. The kind of players that you go to war with.

I think that Cootes is a better skater than Beck, has better offensive hockey IQ and can become a Guy Carbonneau type as a shutdown C who can score..

Beck is a fantastic skater and I definitely give him the edge there. Cootes is also a good skater but I don't think that he is at Beck's level at this point in his development.

I think they are both smart players but I agree that Cootes plays more of a center role whereas Beck may end up on the wing as he is a much more linear player and is considerably thicker and may be best used as a forechecker than sitting in the F3 role. This is not to say that Beck is not a quality center prospect but more so inferring that we may just end up with better centers in the bottom six and I think Cootes could very well supplant him in time. Marty likes having wingers who can take draws and if Beck ends up in a shutdown role his faceoff prowess will be something that Marty will really value as insurance on the wing for the center getting kicked out on key draws.

I'm curious as well. I really like the compete level of both Cootes and Bear as possible picks for the Habs (especially if they move up from 16th OA to 14th OA (package 16th OA and Columbus' 2026 2nd rounder back) or 12th OA (package 16th OA and PIT's 2025 2nd rounder back - 41stOA).

What we need is a high compete level with skill and, ideally, size.

If Montreal moves up to 12th, for example, I think they will choose Carbonneau who skates well, can really score and plays with an edge. They'll just need light a fire under his arse to get a consistent effort from him, but I'm not concerned with the amount of dedicated hockey pros among the young core; Suzuki, Caufield, Guhle, Hutson, Demidov...
