Prospect Info: Draft 2025 - Everyone is trading up, but no one seems to be trading down edition

My list has had Mrtka at 8 for awhile but show me who goes where to get Hagens at 11...
I’m just messing around not predicting anything but crazier things have happened. Very clearly a player with a wide range of opinions and he does not fit in the size/physical bucket that is raging across the league right now.

I’d expect 1-3 of McKenzie’s t10 to be there at 11 and 12. Good chance there’s two.

He's also in the 90th percentile for controlled zone entries, for both forwards and defence in the entire league, so while his scoring might not translate, there is a strong possibility that his transition game will.
I did not know that.

Would have been great to have the 6th pick this year and the 12th but winning meaningless games vs Veg, St. Louis, Ottawa, and Washington was more important
And Dubas will now have to pay a premium to getting back to good if he does want to get a future core piece by moving up..

I find Aitcheson is rather mischaracterized as a defensive dman. He's arguably better right now offensively than he is defensively. But he throws big hits so that automatically makes most assume strong defense.

Draft hope: trade up for Hagens or Martone or get McQueen/O'Brien and Eklund at #11 and #12
Draft expectation: get Eklund and Aitcheson at #11 and #12
Draft fear: get Aitcheson and Lakovic at #11 and #12

I don't think Hagen's gets to 11, but I think it is definitely a possibility.

An example:

1. Schaefer to NYI
2. Misa to SJ
3. Frondell to Chi
4. Martin to Utah
5. Desnoyers to Nashville
6. Martone/JOB to Phi
7. JOB/ Martone to Bos
8. Mrtka to Sea
9. McQueen to Buf
10. Lakovic to Ana

Still leaves Eklund, Smith, and others available too.

I could even see Buffalo reaching for Hensler at 9 in this scenario and Anaheim taking McQueen at 10.

Basically just needs one player to be reached on like Hensler or Lakovic in the top 10 and a smaller forward like Eklund or Hagens falls loose.

hes also old as F which i also hate. feels like drafting an overager almost. hes just not 1 year better then everyone else only older
He's one of the oldest in the draft, I'm not impressed, I hope we choose a different path.

Fair. I've been pretty firm on Schaeffer-Misa 1-2 and then 3 through 8 are "pick your poison" from the A-group. Then 8-12 or so is another "pick your poison" from the B-group. But the wrenches really would be McQueen and how in love some teams are with Smith, Aitcheson, Mrkta, or even Eklund or a guy like Bear. We saw Martin's draft stock rise with the Cats winning the cup and Bennett getting the CS so it's possible other teams might overdraft a guy like Bear, Aitcheson, or possibly Malcolm Spence. I think the over draft of Spence would be him going at 13 instead of 23 but still.

Dubas can’t f*** up the draft picks. Dude has done more harm than good, but he could redeem himself.

Yeah Hagens is the 2nd most likely guy to slide out of the top-10 in my eyes, after Eklund. It really doesn't take something that unrealistic for that to happen, it just takes a team liking Mrtka and one of Aitcheson, Smith, Lakovic or someone else for that to happen.

My best guess would be Mrtka and Smith going in the top-10 while Eklund and Hagens fall out of the top-10. Have the top-12 be something like:

1. NYI: Schaefer
2. San Jose: Misa
3. Chicago: Frondell
4. Utah: Martone
5. Nashville: Desnoyers
6. Philly: Martin
7. Boston: O'Brien
8. Seattle: Smith
9. Buffalo: Mrtka
10. Anaheim: McQueen
11. Pittsburgh: Hagens
12. Pittsburgh: Eklund

I'm very confident that Mrtka goes in the top-10 while Eklund falls, but I'm not nearly as confident with Smith in the top-10 while Hagens falls. I'm just not sure who I see taking Hagens if it's not Nashville or Boston in that top-10.

Not if he takes a defensemen and not if he doesn't move up.

Some one like EK could fall to them, but I sure wouldn't count on it! Move up to 8th at a minimum. Don't take McQueen, stay away from the defensemen.

I think there is a very good chance that the Penguins feel they need/want a top tier defenseman prospect in their system and with two picks B2B in the first round I have to assume that is what they are going to make happen. I don't personally think there ARE any available at that slot but I think there is a good chance the Penguins talk themselves into believing there is.

Jesse mentioned it when he was on the Tip of the ice-burgh, might even be the entire CHL, don't remember exactly..

Yeah Jesse is very high on Aitcheson and had mentioned this about him in the past. He made this long post about him:

"My big concern with Aitcheson is his skating. It's really my only concern. It's a little bit too long in the stride at times and while he generates a lot of power that way it makes it really hard for him to take off in specific situations.

I do not think he has the puck skill of a bonafide elite offensive defenseman, but I think his bucket of skill is good enough to keep up with his desire to be involved offensively, which is extraordinary. He's jumping into the rush, he's using what skill he does have to create good zone entries, and in the offensive zone, he's moving around constantly. Sneaking in the back door, looping in and out of the circles, he understands how to be a functional participant offensively.

Now, flip the script to the other side of the ice. He is definitely overzealous with trying to kill people in the defensive zone. I don't think it's been detrimental to Barrie's success, but it happens. Gonna require coaching up to pick his spots better. That being said, I think he keeps an excellent gap. His pivot and ability to quickly react to changes in both tempo and play direction and pristine. I think he follows the law of stick-length on gap control really well. Across the entire CHL he was in the 90+ percentile for zone entry denial. I've seen people question his gap length, not something I've ever really felt concerned with.

In-zone, he's good. Gets in front of a lot of shots. Cleans up his area defensively super well. But it's puck retrieval work I love from him. He makes smart decisions. You'll see him use the Murphy Dump a lot to spring his forward colleagues with little area-dumps that are positioned perfectly for them. He knows when to skate and when to peel off and wait for help. He makes himself available to his partner for emergency exits really well.

Again, I don't view him as a top pairing guy. I think his ceiling is a really solid, two-way number four that you can deploy in almost any situation regardless of circumstance. If he doesn't hit that, it'll be because he lacks a half extra gear. That's my big issue.

At the end of the day, if you take a look at the defensemen in this class beyond Schaefer, and ask the question of who impacts their games the most? It's Aitcheson for me. Easy. He's doing it across three zones. You see him changing games from sets of work in the OZ, NZ, and DZ. I do not see another defenseman beyond Schaefer who is consistently doing that."

I'm just interested in getting the best player possible out of this draft tbh. If that means flipping 11+12 for 8+Tampa's 2026 1st, cool. If that means using the 11+Rakell/Rust to move up, cool.

It's gonna have to be a draft floor, on the fly thing though. Lotta variables.
if the gm is doing his job, he will have trades lined up all through the first round and maybe more. so, he can just pull the trigger when/if other things line up. imo

Honestly even with a nice write-up from someone who is a fan... that sounds like a player with a LOT of potential pitfalls when it comes to moving through the next two levels of pro hockey.

Yes this is exactly where I'm at with Aitcheson and why I'm scared off from him. If he hits, what he sounds like he can become is a downright awesome middle pair defenseman. I can absolutely see the appeal of him and wouldn't blame the Penguins one bit for taking him at #12.

But there is a lot there that suggests "this guy won't hit", so I think his bust probability is a lot higher than other guys you can take at #12. Not only that, but I think there's a real "Jack Johnson" possibility there, where he plays in a lot of games due to his physicality and perceived offense but he's an active drain on your team.

Questionable skating, questionable hockey IQ, questionable puck skills.....it's not even that they're bad, but there being so many question marks there just makes me feel it's more likely he doesn't pan out.

Perfect scenario is that you use the 11th+ to jump up to 7-9 and snag Martone or Hagens, and you find a guy like Eklund or Smith sitting there at 12th.
