I bet most of the people saying they don't want EP havent even watched him play which is hilarious.

I already see the regurgitated nonsense of him slacking not a good teammate etc.

Even though he isn't playing at a ppg level he is still a real solid player at both ends of the ice and a change of scenery could change that.......maybe not. He's a guy I wouldn't mind betting on especially with 2 fellow countrymen currently under contract.

Look at Vancouver as a whole the last few years...... everyone there has greatly underachieved. I am willing to bet the problem goes much deeper than EP.

The overall point though is that I think Kessel also had some major question marks when he was acquired, and while EP's question marks are larger, I think acquiring EP is similar to acquiring Kessel in 2016. You're getting an expensive prime aged difference maker for a pretty low cost and you're hoping you can get him to return to form. That said, EP is the riskier target because he has larger issues.
it's riskier because Sid and Geno (and some others) are not in their prime anymore.

Pettersson is anything but a lazy player. At this point hustle plays (blocks, battles, stick checks) are a big part of the draw. The reason to be worried about Pettersson is his shot, shift to the perimeter offensively, and the rumours about how he gets on with teammates
He literally led the league in block shots for forwards.

If the consensus is we are trying to compete for the end of Sid and Geno. Why wouldn’t we try to take a gamble on this guy?

I will guarantee he will have better than 60 points in a full season if he played on the 2nd line here.

Some of you just want the Pens to have 15-20 million in cap space every year and do nothing with it. Spend the money and take risks which this hardly is.

My recollection was Kessel was one of the few players not significantly underperforming or looking visibly frustrated under Johnston.

If there's even a question regarding his character it shouldn't be considered.

I cannot imagine Kyle taking that big of a risk. And again he apparently wants to stay in Van.

Statistically I think Malkin was the only guy not significantly underperforming. He had 34 points in 37 games in the first half of 2015-2016. Everyone else was horrid.

Like I said, the only guys who were pacing for even 35 points were Malkin, Crosby, Letang and Kessel. The next highest were Perron and Hornqvist, both of who were on pace for 33 points.

Pets is just a hair old, a smidge expensive, and a touch concerning production-wise for me to be interested unless they just want to give him away.

60 points wasn't a disaster, but finishing the second half of the season with 20 points in 44 games while being a -30 after January 1st was the disaster part.

Granted his bad 2015 with the Penguins was in major part due to Mike Johnston, but I'd also pretty argue that 21 points in 37 games is still pretty poor for how elite of an offensive player Kessel was in the previous years. It wasn't until Sullivan took over and Kessel played with HBK for him to really hit his stride, which is when he was nearly a PPG player in the second half of that season (38 points in 45 games).

Kessel's issues were purely needing a change of scenery, while EP both needs a change of scenery while also has some concerns about his healthy.
Wasn't Crosby at 20 points in 30 games that season? I'd think that would put Kessel's numbers in context.

I now remember we dealt a 1st for Perron, and granted he wasn’t an immediately great fit after the trade, but Johnston decided to put him on the 4th line out of camp the next season. What an insane moron that guy was.

He’s been a bonafide top-6 player since up until a season ago, so Johnston was just plain wrong in his assessment.

Crosby was at 27 points in 36 games and Malkin was at 34 points in 37 games. There was absolutely a team-wide effect from Johnston but I still think Kessel's 21 points 37 games was lacking even in that context.

Where are you getting the games played stuff from when Johnston was canned after game 28? Pens were 15-10-3 when Johnston was replaced by Sullivan.

I was just looking at their stats through December 31st, 2015.

If you want their stats up through Johnston's last game:

-Malkin: 26 points in 28 games
-Crosby: 19 points in 28 games
-Kessel: 17 points in 28 games

Crosby woke up basically the second Johnston got fired but Kessel still struggled until 2016.

To twist yourself into knots in trying (unsuccessfuly) to compare Kessels situation with EP40's, well damn.

I think everyone interested in EP40 should watch this, to really understand what we'd be getting.

His problems aren't only mental.

It's a stupid narrative to want him here. He doesn't fit what we're trying to do anyhow!

His issues are not worth the trouble.

The various quotes from the coaches as well as the Sedins are all the red flags you need. The guy is a bum!
