Doughty nominated for the Norris

So Karlson NEVER plays on the PK (46 total mins) and plays most of his minutes on the PP but he is supposedly the best dman in the NHL? I love the guy but I can't see how not playing in the most critical defensive situations makes him the best dman in the NHL.

I never hold a guy's utilization necessarily against him. They're playing Karlsson to his strenghts, good for them. However, Doughty's utilization should be held in favor, as even with veteran PKers on the roster, he's the TOI leader.

That's a better way of putting it. The thing that gets me going is that Karlsson played in less games and since he is a dman I think it has to matter somehow that he isn't utilized as a truly all around player. DD plays every spot every night and does so while playing the 2nd most minutes in the game this past season. Karlsson had a much easier time of things and as such had a much better chance at putting up more points which shouldn't be the standard that is used when determining who the best defensive player in the NHL is.

Kind of agree. Though I will say if Doughty was utilized the same way Karlsson was--with a focus on offense--I can imagine him putting up at least 60 points again. The 'problem' is he's just flat out elite defensively and has clearly focused immensely on becoming the best guy in the league in that regard. Now if only he could work on his wrist shot release...

Similarly, if Karlsson were used on the PK, I think he'd be Lidstrom-level good at it. He's just not used there and preserved for only offense.
 
I've noticed he waits out the defender, checks his options, reassess, checks his options again, moves in, and then takes the shot. By that time five or six guys are in the lane and it hits a shin pad. Just shoot it!
 
Happy to hear he got a nomination. He was stellar for most of the season, seemed to wear down in the last bit but not surprising considering the minutes he played. But while he's a worthy nominee I will say that I don't think he deserves to win it after not scoring on the power play all year (other than that one out of the blue shot from center ice in the final week of the season) despite receiving among the most minutes on it in the entire league. Yes his all round game is great but he needs to at least be a threat to score to be a worthy winner in my eyes.

Duncan Keith gets it. Both gwg in round one were beautiful just to watch the efficency of a good shot. I think the ot goal he never raised his stick past his knee.
