Here's the thing that pisses me off about this. Yeah, he probably won't get as many of these calls when he's not a rookie....but he is a rookie. Maybe they should just say, don't do that **** this year. And those stick to hand penalties he always gets...they don't help when you don't get called for them either. They are just lazy plays by a player who stopped moving his feet. Maybe that should be worked on, too.

I agree with the last part there, the late desperation reaches are unnecessary.

He’s trying to be Datsyuk and just cleanly strip guys of the puck in highlight reel fashion. He’s done it a few times and it’s been glorious. But the few times it works is probably not worth the penalties taken.

Hopefully he figures out how to stop taking penalties, rather than stop trying to strip the puck.

I don't see it that way at all. I seem him taking a bad angle of being out of position and instinctively trying to slow his man down. You can't often strip the puck when your stick is parallel to the puck carrier's waist. ;)

Not unless there’s been a stick lift prior, agreed. But other successes in that realm suggest to the contrary, I think he’s sneaky in his takeaways and can see him excelling on that in the future.

In any event, the risk-reward doesn't work and the vast majority of his penalties have been of the lazy variety rather than a smart play gone wrong. He has the hands, a la Skinner, to effectively steal pucks but that's not what I see him doing most of the time.
