To anyone willing. TD coming up. Gm's go insane at this time. Or would you rather buy one guy and keep hoping to win the Stanley cup? Hate to tell you, but they need more than one guy.
So is Sweeney just going to ride out this Backes injury? No help coming for the bottom 6 forwards?
Assuming Beleskey comes back in a couple weeks but more needs to be done if Backes is out a month or more which seems likely.
The problem is GM's are not willing to make a move and it's simply because they can't right now. The response to your post suggesting that they sell explained that.
A few timely quotes below from Freidman illustrate those points. The trade deadline does not shape up to provide much of anything in moves this year. Nothng at all to do with wanting to keep a guy, needing more than one guy or winning the cup. Those points are accepted as musts on the Bruins as well as many other teams "to do list". They can't make those moves now and have to wait until the lanscape is clearer following the expansion draft and a few other pieces at play such as bonus monies owed players. Lots of other factors will also have cap implications. It will be years end before teams are in a better position to know exactly where they stand. The waiting game will be frustrating for sure.
"Now that Artemi Panarin is signed and Chicago (eventually) has long-term decisions to make, keep an eye on an additional wrinkle — bonuses that will affect next year’s cap. Panarin himself could count for almost $2.6 million. One of the ways he can max out is finishing top 10 in points. Entering Tuesday’s games, he’s fifth. Brian Campbell already collected $750,000 for playing 10 games. The other one to watch is Gustav Forsling. He received an extra $31,500 for dressing in his 20th game. Every 10th appearance from there until number 60 gets him another $31,500. He’s been in the lineup 31 times, and if he gets 29 more, that adds almost $160,000 to the bonus overage. Between the three of them, the Blackhawks may be forced to subtract approximately $3.5 million. So, things could be even tighter for them."
"Colorado has told teams not to bother asking about Nathan MacKinnon or 2015 first-rounder Mikko Rantanen. After that, it sounds like the organization is determined not to make a panic move just to mollify everyone. The Avalanche know $17 million comes off the books after the season and they will have flexibility. Right now, cap room is as valuable as diamond ore.The price on Matt Duchene in particular would be pretty high. He’s a centre, he scores and he’s signed to a very reasonable contract. If you’re willing to discuss legit young defencemen or defensive prospects, you’re in the conversation. But teams have been told the price is steep."
"Will anything actually happen? This week’s frustrated quote from a GM: “I don’t know why we’re calling each other. No one is doing anything.” As always, no one quoted here is used as an anonymous source.)"
Are we even sure Sweeney still works here?
Most likely.
He's got the hottest goaltender in the AHL, and the NHL's worst back-up performance of the 1st half, and Don "Amateur-hour" Sweeney can't even make that simple move.
I cannot stand Sweeney. But lets be serious here.Boston has ZERO SHOT AT A CUP. .Better to let kid keep playing daily in AHl then watch most nites in NHL..Playoffs is a maybe and I am sure thats what your thinking about. But Sweeney does not want to admit he played another card wrong with Dobby after Hayes and backlash over K Miller deal already having McQuaid etc..This team is a comedy show.the way its run.
Making the playoffs or not, there should be some effort to make the players feel a bit uncomfortable when their performance is so inconsistent. This guy doesn't do anything to shake things up. Don't talk about competing for the playoffs if you're not going to do your part.
We all know he's going to scapegoat the coach at some point, but can't he try something else in the meantime? Anything???
It's a great explanation of Chicago's problems. I didn't give specifics on what trades are available because no one knows at this time what scenarios will be. I fully understand the cap ramifications teams face. I just simply said, if available, sell. Who knows, they might get lucky. They also might suck wind and get and do nothing.
Does Boston have a shot at winning a cup this season? No.
But wouldn't some playoff experience be better for this teams younger players (like Pasta and Carlo) than none at all?
McIntyre is 24, will be 25 in August. I don't have an issue giving him an shot as Rask's understudy.
If anything, it would be great to know whether or not McIntyre would be up for the job as Rask's back-up in order to make better off-season decisions. Because if it turns out McIntyre can't do the job, then they need to find someone this off-season who can.
it`s easy to say "sell" but truthfully, who do the B`s have to sell and who`d want them?
That's true. If in the event that it becomes available, I say sell rather than buy. I can't tell you who, how, what, and where.
I do not want Don Sweeney in charge of a fire sale. He gets terrible value on deals... The first order of business is firing Sweeney and getting an adequate replacement. Sadly the best time for this is the off season. In the meantime he should be frozen from making any more moves given his track record.
On another note why did we take Zboril ahead of Chabot??? Chabot would probably have made our defense this year. You would think the B's would have scouted him too. Heck why didn't we draft this guy with one of the three picks period!
Glad Sweeney finally did something today. Hopefully Dobby can find his game in Providence. I assume he used up all of his allotted fax machine time for the day and that Hayes will follow tomorrow.

“It’s difficult, especially when the expectations really haven’t been lowered,” Sweeney said. “I understand that. I accept that. I’ve been very open and honest in saying that from Day 1, when I took the job, with the core we had, we’d be a very competitive team and be right in the mix of trying to challenge. You get in, you never know what happens. We’ve sort of done that. But we haven’t done enough. Last year, we were in a great position, and we [expletive] the bed. I’m hopeful we’re not tracking in the wrong direction, because we’ve been in a decent position and we haven’t taken advantage of it.”
