Management Don Sweeney extended 2 years

I’m with ya.

I read a bunch of reactions here before I had the chance to watch it. When I finally had the chance to boot it up, I had my torch and lighter ready.

Was everything answered as well as it could have been? Nah. I think the excuses made for Sweeney in 2015 at the draft were particularly lame.

But they said the goal was the Cup. They identified that the league was changing and they needed to change with it. They took responsibility for the bad year. Sweeney was even open when asked if his new head coach should have some NHL experience. He didn’t have to say anything there.

I was ready to join the mob. I ended up being critical of it.
Sweeney also said that any prospective coach would be privileged to join this great original six franchise.

Neely was beyond hyper sensitive to criticism of any kind.

Charlie...

How tone deaf do you have to be?

They are three fancy peas in a pod. Hermetically sealed. Insular, inbred, incestuous, clueless.

I hate them all.

It's crazy how history always repeats. When Chiarelli was let go, folks here hated him. And the message then was the same as the message now. He didn't actually build the Cup team, O'Connell drafted the big forwards, Gorton signed the big free agents. I didn't think it was fair then and I don't think saying Sweeney inherited the 2019 team is fair either.

Wasn't that defense mostly Sweeney? McAvoy was our best D, Carlo was a big key to that run, Krug was recruited by Sweeney, even Grzelcyk was good on that run. Clifton was a Sweeney guy. Up front, DeBrusk had a great playoff. Sweeney traded for Coyle and Johansen. That line with Heinen was the best 3rd line in the playoffs that year. Kuraly, Acciari and Wagner were beasts and all Sweeney guys...
Fair enough.

I was never a Chiarelli bash brother.

Like Claude Julien and many great players who have passed through this town, whatever the sport, Peter was never appreciated for his crucial contribution at the time.

No since.

I know how you feel. I’ve been there. I’m just not there any more. They changed their approach and that caused me to revise my opinion. Is it perfect? Far f***ing from it. But I’m open to see what their plan is.

If I could address one of the points you make here (others have mentioned it too)? The part where Sweeney says that the job of HC of the Bruins is a highly coveted one?

Is he wrong? Like… of course it is. I don’t know what I’m missing. There are only 32 of these jobs in the world. And in comparison to the rest of the league, the Bruins have a recent history of being an enviable franchise. Original Six club with a widespread, passionate fanbase. Before Montgomery punched his own ticket out, Julien (nearly 10) and Cassidy (6) combined for nearly 16 years between them, which is job security almost unheard of in today’s NHL. That’s a desirable position.

I agree.

A) Now that we are here, after the deadline, after the lottery, the selection of a new hesd coach and hopefully a revamp of the entire coaching/scouting staff (Why do we have to hold our breath on this? Why isn't change in this case self-evident? Drive me f*cking crazy) draft day, free agency, further trades, etc.

*I am.fascinated, to see how things play out.* What they do at the draft, etc. etc.

Enjoy it. As entertainment. That's fine.

Yes, the Bruins are a storied franchise. They've been good to very good for 20 plus years.

It's a great market. You can make good money and be Mayor for life if you succeed.

But what Sweeney said and how he said it was (again) condescending, arrogant and insular. He's out of touch. Neely is out of touch. God knows, Charlie is out of touch.

Sweeney is a schmuck. So is Neely. So, sadly, is Charlie.

Sorry not sorry.

These guys have been breathing recirculated air for over a decade.

I want to open the windows and sweep them all out into the whirlwind.

Never to return.

Whelp he is officially attached to this retool, rebuild whatever the hell the next fancy word for fixing the team is called. It’s up to him to right the ship or go down with the titanic.
Naaah, if the ship goes down, there will be a Norwegian Cruise Line ship waiting to pick him up. It's really hard in the NHL to be exiled. Sooner or later there is always another team waiting for all recyclables to be saved and put back in service.

Oh yeah, just meant Bruins organization. He’d be picked up by another team eventually.

While for nostalgia purposes I’d miss complaining about reaching for safe 3rd and 4th liners in the draft I don’t think I’d miss Sweeney. They should have cleaned house after the season. Unfortunately that didn’t happen.
They weren’t cleaning house after one bad season.

And as long as the buildings packed, they won’t clean house.

Ah yes, the guy who can't draft for shit is now going to retool while primarily relying on draft picks.

Useless ass Jacobs family.

I look forward to the 8x13 they're going to give Marner.

2015 aside, he’s actually made a lot of great picks (and 2015 wasn’t all bad, once upon a time Carlo was a very good dman and DeBrusk while a reach worked out pretty well, and don’t forget Zboril was ranked where he was picked)

2014 a lot of the was Sweeney working with scouting team behind the scenes, grabbed Donato, Heinen, and Pasta

2016 we got McAvoy and Lindgren , as much as we didn’t love Frederic’s end here he had some spells of good play and at 29th he’s still in the nhl and playing for a cup contender, someone else here has the stat but I don’t believe players picked even that late have a high percentage of playing the number of games Frederic has

2017 we got Vaak who was ranked around there, sure he shoulda taken the big body center but Vaak became a playwr and was enough of an asset to entice Ducks to send us Hampus who’s even better

2018 we didn’t have much available but grabbed Lauko who became a player and is doing well at the worlds right now

2019 probably his worst year tbh

2020 we got Lorhei who has a ton of talent and became a player albeit young and rough around the edges, Kuntar and Duran show promise

Jury still out on 2021 on, but Lysell, Poitras, Locmelis are all good to great picks, especially Locmelis who was a slam dunk by Sweeney and co considering where he was selected

The irony is if Sweeney picked DeBrusk, Connor, Chabot in 2015 he’d be seen as a perennial GM of the year and the bruins likely are right up there with Florida and certainly pushing Tampa for a cup 2016-2023

The truth is Sweeney is pretty good at his job and this final 3 years will be the pivot point for his legacy. One of the reasons I love hockey is we get to also see how things shake out off the ice, I’m excited

If you aren’t excited (and not you specifically just the royal you, to partially quote the Dude) then I suggest finding a new hobby and working on therapy. Life is too short to get that bent out of shape on this stuff, it’s a fun sport that should bring joy to your life. Don’t waste time on things that are a net negative.
