Management Don Sweeney extended 2 years

Question: doesn’t the short length of the extension limit the head coaching pool? If I’m a potential coach I want a gm with longer term for job protection.

How can Sweeney offer more than a two year contract when he doesn’t know if he’ll be around????

i would imagine contracts are organization dependent, besides anything can have clauses added. Job security not dependent on current GM.

the bottom line is, whoever is making the calls, needs to have an overall organizational vision that doesn't change regardless of if sweeney is here or not - the only question is whether sweeney can make the vision happen. It doesn't change because he's gone

generally the vision should be - speed, skill, grit, intimidation. always now and forever.

Hey, I like Paul McCartney as much as the next guy

But what, exactly, are you trying to say here
I really didn't like it when Paul went through his pearls and bright red liptstick phase. Came across as kind of pretentious if you ask me.

He had such lovely hair. Accompanying the natural look with a simple sundress and a little bronzer would have been my pick.

I’ll never ever miss watching the play die on his stick entering the offensive zone.

The fact that he was that big and had that weak of a shot was baffling to me.

his actually offensive skills were decent to good

his problem was always an utter lack of hockey iq, that's why his best offensive plays came off sheer execution because he would just finally do instead of overthinking everything, you may even call it luck

there were times he'd pinch down and fire home a pass, and he could shoot hard, but his knock coming out of juniors was no offensive instinct

i think one too many concussions finally just did him in

Like many GMs around the league, he’s had some great moves, good moves, bad moves and dreadful moves.

I think Neely is the bigger issue at the end of the day.

Sweeney is on his last leg here. If they struggle these next two seasons, he’s probably finished — at least I’d like to think so.

I don’t love him. I don’t hate him. I’m kind of itching for new blood but he’s earned the right to at least attempt to right the ship.

Gotta be honest. I just don't understand the Sweeney hate.
Every fan needs a target and usually they don’t blame the group we’ve had very good teams in his tenure and the players should be more accountable in a big chunk of this.

Ya know Rask fault clause.. never anyone else

My biggest head scratchers are the obvious 2015 draft and not filling the hole to Krech’s right for years but will say even tho we had the best line in hockey for years some falls on the coach for barely playing Pasta with Krech cause they were amazing together as well.

Anyhow not defending just stating something from my point of view.

Haven't read the thread yet but I'm assuming everyone is ecstatic to get Donny boy back.

Would have liked a fresh perspective, but life goes on

I haven’t seen that from DB. But I could be wrong.

Just because some fans get more upset about not winning then others does not mean they “Don’t care”. Under any circumstances. At the end of the day our comments here have zero impact on the teams outcomes.

If it’s cathartic to complain then complain it’s your right. But to be dismissive of other fans who choose not to bang their heads against the wall seems to be taking it too far to me.
Fair

Yeah agreed, if they weren't going to fire him you cannot let him go as a lame duck GM all year.

One play-off round won past four seasons, so I would now expect an extremely aggressive mindset with trades and UFA offers.
It’s interesting how different fan bases react to coaches.

If Rod Brind’Amour coached in Boston he’d have been fired long ago. 8 seasons of being one of the best teams in the league and 7 straight second round losses. Fans would be saying he can’t win in the playoffs. Carolina only cares about making the playoffs… People here would lose their f***ing minds over the ‘lack of accountability’ for him not being able to win it all.

The coach would get paid the contract either way if he's fired. If a coach is so worried about a GM not being the GM in 2027 I'm not sure he's thinking about the right things. As a lame duck GM I could see trepidations but 2 years is a pretty average leash length in the NHL.

Maybe with the Bruins. When looking at his body of work afterwards, you can understand why the Oilers, even with drafting McDavid and Draistil ( no brainers ) under his watch, let him go only after 4 years with most of their fans wanting him gone two years prior.

and that started in the summer of 2013 (hell you could argue in 2012, he tried to coast that year and then allowed Matt f***ing Bartkowski to be a top 6 guy against the hawks lmao, and signed a guy like daugavins?!) with bad move after bad move

his best move was the florida deal.

signing chara was social capital

his other parts of the core came before him

Sweeney had considerably less to work with and still got this team back to the finals. I give him credit for that. In all reality they should have won or been back in the finals in 2023, the players and Montgomery failed. But I do put the Monty signing on Sweeney, right or wrong, he made the call.

didn’t see that coming after the abortion of a season-ending presser
The outrage over the season ending press conference is another example of the weird realities fans live in. I thought they said everything they should say at that press conference and came in here expecting to see happy reactions. Instead everyone is outraged and I feel like I’m in bizarro world.

It must be me, because all you people seem to have the same story.

I think most of us saw a total lack of accountability from Neely in particular

Carolina are a bunch of underachievers. is that debatable? They have won 9 playoff rounds in 7 seasons and made the conference finals 3 times. He would have a statue here if he did that.

I feel bad for the college kid on admin duties for the Bruins’ Twitter. They are furiously removing comments
