Past round two puts you in the final four. You make it sound like something that should be easily accomplished.

In Sweeney's 10 seasons the Bruins have had one bad season. Last season. By design.

Fair enough, though I do think some hate him- that is pretty evident from posts over the years- and anyway, hater is just a term. I hope no one here actually hates Don Sweeney in the literal sense if they don't know him personally. But re-upping him now is the only realistic thing to do for the club (imo the time to sack was at the end of the season) and its only a two-year extension. That says he has to deliver short-term or he's gone, and also that if he doesn't perform the fire/buyout isn't going to be that costly.

the 2006 draft and FA period worked out pretty good with an interim GM...

I agree. But unfortunately, if the Jacobs family loves you and you consistently get them a few home playoff games, you're golden. Harry Sinden never won a cup, and he was GM for nearly 30 years. He went through 12 coaches, and when they had an early/earlier than expected playoff exit, he made the Coach the scapegoat by firing them.

I was going to reference the report we saw this week with regards to Tocchet but just realized who it came from :ha:

But as you said, if it was in fact a concern for coaching candidates- being the GM gets canned then a new GM will come in and hire their own coach- I guess thats off the table for now.

I am rather perplexed, however. I really thought they would see how this season goes.. Even if the above was a concern - Im sure its not for these young coaches just trying to break in as a HC.

In the same breath, I also cant say Im surprised by this nor am I really all that butt hurt lol

You've been clear for years you have zero expectations for this group to be successful in the play-offs. Making the play-offs is your bar, just like Jacobs it would seem. You don't care when the Bruins are favorites and get bounced. Underdogs get bounced.. Play-offs are hard, I know.

Also ignoring 2015, what has he done that has been great? He inherited a team that the 2 years prior went to the Cup finals and won the Presidents Trophy and had a core of:

Bergeron (29)
Lucic (26)
Marchand (26)
Krejci (28)
Rask (27)
Hamilton (21)
Smith (23)
Pastrnak (18)
Krug (23)

I think my favorite Sweeney move was trading a 26 year old Lucic because he doesnt want to pay big money to a power forward into his 30s...then giving the same big money contract to a 31 year old Backes who he'd later have to pay a 1st to unload.

No GM who has zero Cups should ever be given the chance to hire their 3rd coach.

And two years prior to now the Bruins had the best regular season ever.

Fact is Sweeney inherited a team that missed the playoffs. And they missed again in his first season. They then went to the Finals 3 years later.
