Management Don Sweeney extended 2 years

The Bruins have signed general manager Don Sweeney to a two-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday morning.

Sweeney has been in his post for just over a decade and his new pact will run through the 2027-28 season.

It’s poised to be a busy offseason for Sweeney, who is in the process of finding a new head coach, while also preparing for the draft — the Bruins have the No. 7 pick — and the start of free agency July 1.
Sweeney was the GM for Team Canada’s gold-medal winning squad at the Four Nations Face-off in February and will serve as an assistant GM for 2026 Winter Olympics.

Team president Cam Neely said following the season, which ended without a playoff berth, that Sweeney’s status was something that he would figure out in “the near future” as the GM entered the final year of his current deal.

“I’ve given it a lot of thought and I’m still contemplating what the best course of action is, but as I mentioned, I really feel like Don has done a good job here for the most part,” Neely said last month. “Obviously the year that we had is a huge disappointment, and that falls on all of us, not just Don, that falls on all of us.”

The Bruins will be armed with upward of $28 million in salary cap space as they seek to remake the roster. There are core players in place in all three positional groupings — David Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy, and Jeremy Swayman — and Sweeney will be tasked with building around those foundational pieces.

But first, Boston needs a coach. They could be tempted by a coach with a track record of quick results, such as Gerard Gallant or Peter Laviolette.

But the case could be made that the Bruins’ ceiling could be lifted even higher if they identify and add a fresher voice behind the bench.

I'm sure everyone will react to this rationally and with tact.
My first thought too lol.

People refuse to let go of the 2015 draft, because past that he's been a great GM. Assembled one of the most stacked rosters we've ever seen in the cap era. Not his fault the players/coach fudged it up in the first round.

Not surprised. Sweeney used to play for the Bruins, is a good friend of Neely's, and the Jacobs family likes him. That's important, apparently.

The next Coach will likely get a very short leash if/when the team doesn't light it up in the next year or two. Sinden went through 12 Coaches in 28 years as GM.

An endorsement by Charlie

and more importantly

A message to UFAs and coaching candidates- whether they view it as good news remains to be seen
Yeah agreed, if they weren't going to fire him you cannot let him go as a lame duck GM all year.

One play-off round won past four seasons, so I would now expect an extremely aggressive mindset with trades and UFA offers.

nothing is ever his fault. Past round two once in a decade is without a doubt the fault of the 200 plus players and 4 head coaches.

didn’t see that coming after the abortion of a season-ending presser
It definitely was an awful press conference. But with the Press Conference and the Jacobs interview with the Boston Globe, what stuck out to me is how emotional Neely was in defending Sweeney and Jacobs was in defending both Sweeney and Neely.

The core of that stacked roster was pre Donnie. He rode them as long as they could go, now all thats left is Pasta and it shows how horrible he did.
But to be honest, i wasn't expecting any less from this FO. What a bunch of idiots. I'm not suprised.

Trying to do a positive spin:

1) Tocchett "reports" of not wanting to sign here with GMs job in question pushed this.

2) Its not a 5 year deal. His team fell apart, he gets a chance to put it together again, unlike Chiarelli. But its not 5 years at least? So there is a possibility if the suck continues they can not re-sign him, or fire him without having to pay much.

Yeah, they missed the opportunity to fire him when the season ended.

Only move that makes sense here. 2 years seems smart - enough time to give him ownership over the direction, but not locked in to a long term situation.

I believe that new blood/new direction is needed in the front office, but I understand this move.

I guess the prospect pipeline isn't going to improve over the next two years and FA will be underwhelming. But Don wore the sweater and is friends with Cam. Lets be real, the Bruins aren't a serious organization. The Jacobs get what they want out of it which is making money, concessions, gates etc...but this team has under performed for the majority of Don Sweeney's time here. His trades, I'll give him credit for they've turned out to be very good. Free Agents and Drafting has been piss poor not even mentioning that abomination that was 2015. At some point give someone else a chance. Could have sacked him and gotten Jarmo Kekalainen before he went to the Isles. Darche? McDonald? I dunno bring someone new in with new ideas. But hey...everything on Causway St is fine.

Like I understand why they did what they did but that doesn't mean its the right move long term. You have to sell "stability" to a prospective coach even though I'm assuming its going to be Sacco or Leach at this point.

So the silver lining being that after 10 years of coasting on a core largely not built by him the fan base only has to put up with this for 2 more years? Does this mean that Murphy was right regarding the Tochett report and that the broken clock was set at the right time?
