What's ridiculous about it being awkward for Canadian/US players taking on their own country?

It's a legitimate consideration when it comes to whether they win or lose this thing.

Because this isn't the Olympics. Nobody is medaling for their country. There are teams that were set up in a way to make the tournament fun and more interesting. These teams are all trying to win first place. No additional logic required.

So nationalism isn't a factor in an "international tournament."

OK then.

Although I don't think it'd have much of an impact on the final outcome...it's not such a stretch to say that there may well be an awkward moment or two should YG's play TC.

Remember when Malkin, at the 2015 WC, had the perfect opportunity to lower the boom on Crosby? As everybody and his brother saw, he saw it was Sid and eased up...

Don't kid yourself. Something similar could happen again if a TC vet gets McD in his sights. You think any Canuck wants to be remembered for taking McJesus -- Messianic, heir apparent of the Hockey Gods -- outa commission?

I was thinking more along the lines of the YG's feeling awkward.

Does McDavid really want to be the one who eliminates Canada in OT? Does the thought of it fill him with excitement?

Will Goudreau jump for joy after his empty-netter takes out Team USA?

Awkward doesn't begin to describe it.

Absolutely, they have more motivation and are in better shape than the rest of the teams. From a purely talent perspective they are easily the 2nd best team top to bottom they might have as much as Canada.

The tournament is a farce which is why this wont affect these players. Which also gives team N/A a legit advantage in my opinion.

Its not a true best on best or international tournament when you have multiple teams from the same countries or combined countries.

It's not complicated. The NHL is putting on the tournament to bring in $50+ million in Profit. They aren't putting on a tournament to decide which country has the best hockey team. Nationality is simply a pretty good way to divvy up the talent.

I love that there is a U-23 NA team. There isn't a better gimmick that they could have picked. These are the guys that fans (especially young fans which the NHL is trying to market to) want to see getting a ton of ice time.

I don't think it will be a problem. "McDavid is the only one who can beat Canada"

No Canadian's are going to be that mad. I would be more made as a Calgarian haha.

Gaudreau and Eichel doing well is the best thing that can happen for Team US. When have they ever had Eichel and Gaudreau type players coming up. Patrick Kane was the last one and that was 5 years ago.

It says Matthew's was born in Arizona? I thought he just grew up there? Is he dual citizen and picked Canada or what?

I don't think they can top Canada.

Everyone else...I think they have a fighting chance.

They are sure fun to watch though! Maybe Matt Murray can backstop them to a World Cup!

I think so. They have ridiculous amounts of skill, but more importantly lots of youthful speed and energy, very little pressure, and a desire to show that they deserve to be on their national teams going forward.

While I think Canada is a better team, I wonder what the motivation of the older players who have already won Olympic Golds is going to be when the NHL season hasn't even started yet. I'm sure a lot of them are just hoping to avoid injuries. *knock on wood*

But that's how they're marketing it.

Who cares how they're marketing it? You have a lot of issues with this tournament and a lot of them have nothing to do with hockey but things like the name (World Cup), calling it "International", anthem issues, marketing strategy etc. but for the people who care mostly about the hockey, it's not so bad.

A ton of positive reaction to the young guns so far and they sure were a pleasure to watch. Must be disappointing for all the haters but what can you do. Perhaps you guys should reconsider your pointless boycott and watch a game or two, you might even enjoy it if you can get past the marketing, the anthems, the name ...

I think YG's would relish beating Canada/USA. They're in it to win it! What's more, I give them a pretty good shot at upsetting Team USA Don't think too many stateside would be crestfallen either ( That's NOT the Yank's A-Team!).

Course they gotta finish top 2 in their group first and that won't be easy

But that's how they're marketing it.

That's the only marketing message you are receiving because it fits your tired narrative. The point of the tournament is pretty clear. If it is entertaining (and it has been so far) then who cares? The only point of watching sports is to be entertained.

the young guns were SO fun to watch, i love it. cant wait to see how they handle some of the top teams

Are a bunch of young budding NHL superstars going to feel awkward proving every doubter wrong in a tournament watched all over the world, defeating their home countries due to somebody else deciding that they would play for NA instead? Making history and pretty much cementing themselves as true hockey stars? Almost guaranteeing that more young players will be taken in actual international tournaments (such as the Olympics, if the NHL goes) and get to represent their countries when it isn't a gimmick tournament?

Yeah, I think they will be glad to defeat Canada or USA, and the awkwardness will be minimal. They're competitors. They've been bonding with this current team, and will continue to do so, and probably talk all the time about how excited they would be to play against their home country, and hopefully come out victorious.
