Even odder, Nylander had 5 hits (and 5 blocked shots) in his four games.
Marner was credited with just 1 block and yet he played 7 games and plays PK.
I mentioned during the playoff games though...Marner doesnt try to block shots, he makes himself as small as possible. I also noticed that he covers his face with his glove out of fear of being hit by a shot. Which on this play, ended up not being a shot and just a pass lol.
This is Marners style... he doesn't go into corners, he allows opponents to get the puck and then tries to poke it away.
He doesn't block shots, he tries to intercept passes.
He doesn't take a hit to make a play, he just throws the puck away randomly to avoid being hit. I saw him do this again just last game.
He doesn't screen the goalie, he skates slowly through the crease. He doesn't want to set up, because he knows he will get roughed up.
I also don't think his style blends well with linemates. For instance his PKing often gets the team in trouble because he chooses to go rogue and attempts a double team on a puck carrier or tries to block a suspected pass - puts himself out of position and then the team scrambles out of position. This also happened vs Boston in the playoffs and led to a PP Goal against. Something similar happened a few games ago vs Washington where he drifted down and completely left his Dman and then was doing the funky chicken trying to pretend to block a shot and simultaneously get out of the way of it too.
His ozone style of being obsessed with being on the blueline... lost count of how many times Knies or Matthews have had the puck down low and have nobody to pass to because Marner is standing 3 men across on the blueline.
There is alot we don't see behind closed doors, and I wonder how annoyed Berube is with Marners refusal to play in the dirty areas. Marner had moments early in the season where he made an honest effort and it was great, but he took a few big hits, hits an offensive short lived streak offensively and then resorted back to being old Marner.
Remember how he actually pushed back a few times? This was because he actually emotionally and physically involved himself in the game... playing real hockey and not shinny got him pissed off!
Hes been moderately better this year, but it's also a contract year. Tavares has been light years better in a contract year. So just wait until he gets his next contract.
