That was said before Laine got injured.
good to know, But if the GM based his whole season on a single player that would speak volumes to him being a bad GM.

Weren't Hab's fans thinking the previous GM was an idiot because his strategy every season was " Jesus Price, bring us to salvation"?

I guess Habs fans wanted to skip the growing pains part of the rebuild.

Nine of ten times, it doesn’t work that way, and it’s unrealistic to expect it to work that way. It’s not just - fill roster with young, high end draft picks/prospects. After that, there’s the development period. And it’s usually a painful few years before the names actually have the sort of impact fans assign to them on draft day.

I like the look of their youth, and feel they have a bright future. I’m just shocked there’s people who thought it would come as early as this year.

Putting the teams inconsistencies on the coach in this situation is ridiculously deluded thinking.

Being in the mix until April.

The question though is whether that was just said publicly to get fans excited for the year or if they actually expected it internally. I don’t see how they would have expected significant improvement from the roster this year short of Hutson having a Makar/Hughes/Fox like rookie year and Slafkovsky taking another huge leap to true top liner. They lack both top end talent and depth.

Why did they ever think this team was even close to playoff ready? Keep him for now, fire him next year if it’s the same thing
A rebuild isn't easy. Especially, when you get to the point in time when you expect to turn the corner. But, that's when you need to make some moves to support the younger players.

Anaheim has missed the PO for 6 straight seasons now. Still looking like a Non PO team. So, will be 7 years for them. Det, even if you start from Yzerman, it's been 5 years for them (8 in total), and this season again is going to be touch and go between making/missing the PO.

SJ has missed since 2020, also 5 years and are going to be hard pressed to make the PO in the 2020's decade.

At this point the Canadiens should have some clear building blocks, in particular Dach, Newhook were acquired to do more than just eat minutes, and the hope was they could develop those building blocks while shedding bad contracts over time.

I think if at the end of the year it just looks like Suzuki, Caufield and Slafkovsky are all they have to build around, he'll get fired. The decision would go beyond wins and losses.
