The management (which even includes Dubas now too!) clearly view Marchand and Point as better players than Marner.
No, they don't. You wishing something were true doesn't make it true. The idea that anybody would think that about especially 2025 Marchand is hilarious. They clearly view them as good players that have international familiarity and have found "professional and international" success, and that was the theme they prioritized in their first 6 publicly announced selections (which doesn't actually mean anything).

Brayden Point took a bridge 2nd contract (AFTER) Marner had signed his GREEDY UFA contract.

View attachment 899808

Then Point backed that up by leading the 2020 and 2021 in playoff goals with 14 each season and Tampa Bay hoisting the Stanley Cup both seasons.

View attachment 899813

Meanwhile Marner put Himself $$$ before the TEAM, and while Point was leading his team to Stanley Cups. Mitch Marner was going goalless and struggling in the playoffs with Leafs losing embarrassingly to Columbus and Montreal.

View attachment 899816

While Point [28 goals 56 points] on his new contract in the first 2 years outscoring Marner [0 goals 8 points].

Clearly Team Canada based on the press release was looking for players and proven winners and those that put TEAM before themselves.
It's pretty obvious to anyone trying to be objective that, Mackinnon/Crosby/Marchand are staples, Makar/McDavid are the best in the league and Point is there because Cooper is the head coach.

Are you saying that all the other players not listed aren't 'proven winners and those that put TEAM before themselves.'?
Considering the source it kind of makes sense.

The same Cooper who said "Marner has one of the best hockey IQ's ever". That seemed like a convenient time to use Cooper's opinion. I'm sure he respects Marner plenty.

Couldn't possibly be that the collective management team just views Point as a better player? And they're not just offloading something as impactful as that on a simple coach's preference?

Yeah typically you "build around" who your best players are. Really not much to debate here.

The management (which even includes Dubas now too!) clearly view Marchand and Point as better players than Marner. It might break your little heart but that's just how they view it.
Salary will never reflect it but to date Marchand and Point have been better than Marner. They have something Marner doesn’t.

If Marner got announced alongside Crosby, McDavid, Mack, Makar as a player Team Canada is going to "build around", you can bet it'd all of a sudden mean a whole hell of a lot, there'd most definitely be some posters (not saying it'd be you) who'd be tickled pink by it and let everyone else know.

Oh wow Point too? Wasn't that another one that Marner had to be unanimously considered vastly superior to otherwise you know nothing?
Comparing "Winning" resumes. :wg:

Brayden Point has played for the Tampa Bay Lightning for his entire eight-year NHL career (2016-24), collecting 553 points (264 goals, 289 assists) in 580 career games, as well as 87 points (42 goals, 45 assists) in 87 playoff games. He scored 14 goals in the playoffs in two-consecutive seasons to help the Lightning win back-to-back Stanley Cups (2020, 2021).

Internationally, Point has won silver at the IIHF World Championship, gold at the IIHF World Junior Championship, gold at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup and bronze at the IIHF U18 World Championship.

PS. Marner won the Memorial Cup with London of the OHL, but that was before he even made the NHL.

Right and the NHLPA, player agents and teams look at comparable. Take the fan emotion out of it, take the illogical blind hate out of the calculus and look at just numbers, Mitch has performed at a higher rate, for his career, than Willie in less GP. If Will sets the floor, Mitch will ask for and get a higher AAV. It is a business calculation, not a fan opinion calculation.

And if those stats reflected equal amounts of time playing with an improving Matthews and a declining Tavares they would point a more accurate picture.

If Marner was one of the first 6 publicly announced players, either nobody would notice or care (since we already know he's going to be on the team, and I'm not sure I've ever seen anybody make a big deal about order of announcement before), or we'd have people trying to claim that it was only because of Dubas. I wasn't even aware they were announcing players in groups for this random tournament, or that they had made an announcement at all.

Since I can’t move the other 2, I keep all 3. Stay the course, sink or swim with this bunch as long as they don’t rob me. lol!
You can move any of them if you really want to. Not a barrier I would even consider.

I think you’re right they’ll keep all three. In their model, it works perfectly and has achieved everything they’ve wanted it to and from here on everything is gravy.

In this unique case, you got this completely backwards. Marner would be wise to sign a deal now. He will get less on the ufa market. Pretty delusional to think teams will be lining up to give him more than he’s currently making lol. If Marner thinks otherwise his iq is definitely below 70 then.

Lol.

Why would a team that would not be interested in signing Marner with a large cap hit be interested in trading and losing assets for Marner and taking on a contract with a large cap hit?

At the end of the day the regular season matters, it is what pays the bills and provides 7 months entertainment

Do the 212 who voted that he would be moved this off season still believe that? Any others like to change their vote?
We have what, Six weeks to go?

He's owed less than a million in real dollars this year and Leafs could retain half this year and some in subsequent years to make him more attractive.

What? We paid 90% of his salary this year and you still are willing to retain on a future contract? Who are we trading him for McDavid/Bedard?

😂😂🤣🤣🤣

We'll need to retain to get 1st round pick back. :D :D McDavid 🤣

He is currently fetching nothing. Man is untradable. You are not getting prospect back, but thank for the lols.

edit: not enough first rounders in the world to slap on top of Marner at 100% retention to get Bedard.

Mitch @100% cap retention +1st+2x 2nd for Kadri?

I would love Kadri back, but I don’t think he works here. Refs seem to love to neuter his play style in the post season. But I would take him back regardless.

Marner as a straight swap for Kadri I’d be cool with.

But I think you’re on the right track with character types we should be targeting. Gritty, tough, 2-way players. I would like some dmen myself, but we are lacking in the c spot for sure.

Judging players by straight up point production is silly. Especially when you consider Marner is not driving offence on his own, plays with the best scorer in the world, and has the supporting cast in Willy and JT. Straight point production does not tell the whole story with Marner. And if we pay him based off where he slots in points, we are in trouble.

His impact vs Nylander’s is negligible and he should not make a penny more than him. I would say Marner at 11 is an overpayment and should not be considered.

I would love Kadri back, but I don’t think he works here. Refs seem to love to neuter his play style in the post season. But I would take him back regardless.

Marner as a straight swap for Kadri I’d be cool with.

You would trade a 27 year old Marner for a 34 Kadri with 6 years left on a brutal contract, whose play is regressing? Jesus Christ. This place has gone to shit.

Kadri was a huge contributor to COL’s cup win. He is a great player we should have never gotten rid of.

I see it as a player who fills a void (2c) @ 7mil. He fits in with our window (Matthews contract, Tanev contract, ELC players, ext) we would save 4+ mil in this trade scenario.

Interesting comment though. You say this place is going to shit but do nothing to contribute to the convo yourself.

Let’s have an adult discussion on this? We are all fans at the end of the day.

2024 will forever be known as the HF Summer of Idiocy.

Instead of passive aggressive insults - how about you add something to the discussion?

Passive aggressive bunch - who’d of thought you guys were Marner fans? Lol
