His replacement did just as poorly with 34 and 88. If he is given the mandate to resign 16, you can bet he overpays. Marner most likely not taking a cent less than 88, all but guarantees it.
Nope he hasn't earned his 11 let alone an increase.

11 million for what he has produced. He hasn't been top 10 player in the league over the last 6 years of his present deal. Yet he was paid as a top 5.

He should get less than what Rantanen gets and I think rantanen may get 11 or 11.5
In this case I agree with you but these are the Leafs. Willie @ 11.5mx8 is further proof. MLSLE caters to their corporate season ticket holders. They need sizzle to keep them happy. No way Mitch takes less than Willie IMO.

You must really hate the Nylander deal.

What is your criteria for being a top 10 player?

Nylander is overpaid but as I've said he was underpaid before so I'm good with it
Seems kind of a silly way to look at it.
Regardless, by that criteria you should be fine with Marner since he was underpaid on his prior contract.

Saw this on the main board.

Since 2019 Marner is 8th in p/gp. That seems pretty good?

Not sure that is an accurate statement

Just all in all play there are 10 guys I would rather have had than Mitch. Hey if he gets 11 per year it by no means means he is a crap player because he isn’t, just not top 10

I don't think anyone would consider if top 10 League wide when considering all positions.

Probably a top 10 forward. Puts up points and is good defensively.

Didn't the 4 nations management team select Marchand as one of their first 6 guys and not Marner?

But they can’t keep over paying those three players. If they competed and consistently dominated in the playoffs, fine, but that doesn’t seem to be who they are.
I can’t pin the team’s failure on one guy, he played well it’s a reward similar to Ovi being overpaid now and he was never really underpaid

Correct... Marner not considered among the Top 6 Canadian players for the tournament. The announcement shows and includes 8 X Stanley Cups wins and focuses on players that represented Canada in the past internationally and lead them to successes.

First six players unveiled for 4 Nations Face-Off

Crosby, MacKinnon, Makar, Marchand, McDavid, Point named to Canada for international event

The initial list includes three former first-overall picks in the NHL Draft (Crosby, MacKinnon, McDavid), while all six players have suited up for Canada’s National Junior Team at the IIHF World Junior Championship and five have played for Canada’s National Men’s Team at the IIHF World Championship (Crosby, MacKinnon, Marchand, McDavid, Point). The six players have won a combined eight Stanley Cups, as well as two gold medals at the Olympic Winter Games, six gold at the IIHF World Junior Championship, four gold and two silver at the IIHF World Championship, and gold and bronze at the IIHF U18 World Championship.

“We are excited to announce the first six players who will represent Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February, as these are six world-class players and leaders on their NHL teams that we can build a strong and successful team around,” Sweeney said. “Sidney, Nathan, Cale, Brad, Connor and Brayden have been successful at various levels of their professional and international careers, and we look forward to all six being key contributors to our team as we look to win on the international stage next season.”

Oh wow Point too? Wasn't that another one that Marner had to be unanimously considered vastly superior to otherwise you know nothing?

The Chicago Blackhawks are believed to be ready to make a major splash soon, and not only has Mitch Marner's name come up, but John Tavares' name as well.

This summer, we saw the Nashville Predators take no prisoners, dominating day 1 of free agency, signing Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault and Brady Skjei to big money, multi-year deals. Next summer, according to Mark Lazerus of The Athletic, it could he Chicago's turn to dominate the UFA market.

The Blackhawks have already reeled in a former Maple Leaf, signing Tyler Bertuzzi to a 4-year deal on July 1st, and Lazerus believes that if both Tavares and Marner hit the free agent market in 2025, the Hawks could target both of them, which may be an exciting prospect for Bertuzzi, who would likely fully endorse the reunion.

Would Marner even be able to walk in the windy city without being blown down the street?

First 6 selected does not equal 6 best players, FYI.
“We are excited to announce the first six players who will represent Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February, as these are six world-class players and leaders on their NHL teams that we can build a strong and successful team around,”

They selected the 6 players they would like to "build around" and it didn't include Marner.

Pin it on all three.

Do you move one, two, all three, or keep all three?

You really think this is meaningful?

Shirley you can do better than this. :help:

Since 2019 he's ahead of all but McDavid and Mackinnon in points.

Yeah we're supposed to pretend that if Marner was selected as one of the first 6 to build around you and the other fanboys wouldn't be parading around and celebrating it.

And none of that says that they consider them the 6 best players. They're just top players with cups and international familiarity and success.
Not sure why anybody would care what order they're selected in.

Yeah typically you "build around" who your best players are. Really not much to debate here.

The management (which even includes Dubas now too!) clearly view Marchand and Point as better players than Marner. It might break your little heart but that's just how they view it.

Brayden Point took a bridge 2nd contract (AFTER) Marner had signed his GREEDY UFA contract.

1723125655178.png

Then Point backed that up by leading the 2020 and 2021 in playoff goals with 14 each season and Tampa Bay hoisting the Stanley Cup both seasons.

1723125879912.png

Meanwhile Marner put Himself $$$ before the TEAM, and while Point was leading his team to Stanley Cups. Mitch Marner was going goalless and struggling in the playoffs with Leafs losing embarrassingly to Columbus and Montreal.

1723126357417.png

While Point @ $6.75 mil AAV [28 goals 56 points] on his new contract in the first 2 years outscoring Marner @ $10.9 mil AAV [0 goals 8 points].

Clearly Team Canada based on the press release was looking for players and proven winners and those that put TEAM before themselves.
