I think he probably does, but he shouldn't.

Mike Gillis on the other hand... he's been choosy but I think he eventually gets back to being a GM.

I really don't think so.

Although I don't think many people thought back around April of 2018 that Don Waddell would get not just one, but two more GM jobs in the NHL.

Jim Benning probably still has talent for scouting players, but you also probably would want to remove decision making from his responsibilities.

Just have Jim travel and scout, allow him to contribute when making the draft list, but don't ever let him have control.

If he does lets hope its a team with a deep prospect pool and lots of draft capital so we can get some back in trades for aging vets..

Seriously this guy was so bad I could a top 10 list of blunders and still miss some major ones

No team should ever have to go through what Vancouver fans did for 10 years with Benning. Trades were pointless and left you scratching your head. There really was no sense of direction with that man at the helm. Benning is also a overrated scout. Sure Hughes was a given, but he passed on Matthew Tkachuk to select Olli Juolevi, and he would of selected Cody Glass over Pettersson if Linden and the scouts didn't jump in. Forsling for Clendening. Kelser for junk. The infinite amount of 2nd rounders traded for reclamation projects. F$%k off, Benning should be no where near another NHL franchise, and if anyone is stupid enough to hire him?!, Then you totally deserve what you get.

Jim Benning is an absolutely terrible scout who wanted to take Jake Virtanen, Olli Juolevi, and Cody Glass over the Canuck scouting staff who wanted Larkin/Tkachuk/Pettersson with those successive top-6 picks.

Couldn’t pro scout an effective NHL defender in 9 years.

The guy has no idea what he’s looking at when he’s watching a hockey game.

He built the Canucks into a winner by acquiring the greatest athlete of our generation. No doubt he gets snapped up, as per my sources he has been consulting with 4 teams that I won't say who but I'll give you their initials; FP, NYR, DS, EO

Did Jason Bottorill or Chiarelli have any trades like the Miller deal ? I'm just asking. Maybe they did
Miller turned out but even there Benning had to Benning. Tampa was way over the cap and basically advertised they needed to move players out. Miller was a $5M+ third line centre at the time. Benning had the leverage and still forked over a 1st round pick+.

Again, Benning shouldn't be responsible for making decisions. I believe he would still be a viable asset to an organization as a scout, purely, as a scout.

His scouting record before Vancouver was really bad in Boston too. The main reason he’s thought of as a good scout is because he likes to do it and his favourite traits are the loud skills that can maybe play up of the other more important skills
develop.

Been a decade. Gillis is like 65. Hasn’t stayed connnected with the NHL game. I mean who has he worked with that would vouch for him?

Benning. Some scouting or agm role. Not getting a gm job.

If I was an owner, I would hire Jim Benning.

He would be my special advisor to hockey operations. I would allow him to hire 1-2 assistant executives to work with him. I would challenge them to run a shadow operation for my hockey team where they provide me with a recommendation on what to do for each big decision at the draft, free agency, or trade deadline.

And I would make sure that I do the opposite of what Jim Benning tells me to do.

I feel like the actual downside of Benning is kinda missed. I see people panning the Kesler trade (worth reading how few options there were there) or letting Forsling go (he ended up on waivers, so other GMs missed him too). Juolevi and Virtanen crapped out but were well touted. I am in no way boosting him - he was awful. But it was more the widespread “meh”-ness of so many of his moves that made it bad - and that trend lasted nearly a decade. Slight overpayments on contracts… always. Slight overpayments on trades… always. Yup, there were some stinkers too. But that moderate doofus tax that agents and rival GMs always extracted is what really sank the team for such a long time.

In this league, where gms and coaches are recycled ad nauseum, if you're part of the obc, you always got a shot. I could see him working his way into an agm role, and taking over once said gm is ultimately fired.
