Does Hiring Vigneault Mean a Reprieve for Brad Richards?

I really don't think he cares.

Dolan would have shelled out around $50M to make Richards and Redden go away over the past few years.

If he doesnt care about that, I'd be hardpressed to imagine he cares about anything.

.....so yea, I guess I agree.

Well, buyouts don't get paid as a lump sum. The Rangers are pulling in soooo much money these days, it hardly matters

50 million dollars matters...even if its not a lump sum...you can do the math as a percentage and stuff, but its a ton of cash no matter how you pay it out.

Interesting and good comment from Brooks today in the post that I think reflects the opinions of those who feel the coach is not the prime issue with this club.

"Finally, you have to have elevating talent such as that owned by Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane to win the Cup, but you also have to have size, and plenty of it.

Which is to say the Rangers aren’t as close as they think."

Who would argue that the rangers lineup is still lacking?

How does above absolve our ex coach from his blunders?

This team should benefit from the coaching change both now and in the future.

JTs system/personality gets old fast. Time to go regardless. ...

That's the thing, we know Sather needs to go but we know it's not happening anytime soon so we try to discuss the changes that are actually happen but people still beat the dead horse about Sather.

I want him gone as much as the next guy but Ive come to grips with the fact that it just ain't happenin

What does this have to do with Sather directly though? Did you really feel it was necessary to post this?

Fire Sather. Rinse. Repeat.

The way Dolan looks at it is he spends over 50m but over that time he brings these new players in and he doubles that with sponsors rangers gear raised ticket prices.. He looks at it as a business model spending to make money..

Either way you slice it Richards will be getting paid for not playing at some point during this contract. There is no way he plays to the end of his contract. If I'm Dolan I get it over with now. No sense in risking an injury next year when you can be rid of him this summer.

Especially considering you may be able to snag a guy like Horton or Brieire for way less money if they're bought out.

Only Briere is getting bought out. Horton is UFA.

Probably because he's seeing if he can trade him. In all likelihood there is more than one team out there who would be interested in seeing if Richards can bounce back in a new city. If he doesn't retire until 2017, the cap recapture penalty is only 2 years and $5M and change. By then the cap is likely to be back up around $80M. It might be a chance the Rangers are willing to take if someone offers a reasonable package for Richards.

I had mentioned weeks earlier that this scenerio maybe possible, but that was before Richards was a healthy scratch. I hope that tradeing him would be an option. But since Richards has the no trade clause I could see him being difficult & forcing the Rangers to buy him out. Either way he get's his money.

The Rangers have to buy him out.

Other teams are buying out guys like Briere and Lecavalier who are of similar age, performance and cap hit to Richards. Although I would say Briere and Lecavalier might have more left in the tank than Richards.

We will need the cap room this season and for sure in the future. Its a no-brainer. Buy him out and learn from it...stop forcing stupid contracts!

Vinny bought out. I'd say he is a much better player than Richards, yet he was still bought out. Richards, you're next.

This has to be really difficult for him to go through. Uncertainty is never fun. There was about a month, when I was living in Charleston, where I knew I was being transferred somewhere, but didn't know if it was Miami, DC or Nashville. It ended up being Nashville, but that was hell.

I think it does. Stats wise it will be better, but ultimately he will play better.

I think Torts was a no-nonsense coach. You play hard, you well. If something is wrong tell me, if not then shut your mouth and play.

I think AV will study his team more, study his opponents more and teach it adequately. Richards will be put into roles he better succeeds because he coaches offensive and defensive lines where Torts is more traditional and does checking lines and scoring lines.

According to SNYRblog, AV is already reaching out to Richards and meeting with him. He has his own trainers and coaches meeting with him. I believe it is to see how they make this work and I think they will.

Was he not also more money and for a much longer term?
It doesnt have to do with whose better, or whose more talented. Its what they can do with or without you depending on coach and GM

I think he stays.

UNLESSS they think they can do better with signing Briere and Lecavalier lol.
Then yes, Richards is gone. I guess I wouldnt mind change for either of those guys but the price has to be right. Both guys are like 7 million dollar players, no? They will probably want at least 5 million. Briere probably 4.5...

Briere I can see going even 4 for a playoff team.

I think that even under the best of circumstances Richards won't get a contract that is worth anything close to the $33M he's owed over the next 4 years of his deal. So ultimately it boils down to being traded to a team that wants him for that amount, or let the Rangers buy you out and take your chances on the open market.

How Richards plays, or who we have lined up to replace him, isn't relevant.

If we don't buy him out this summer or next, then we will incur a large cap penalty when Richards retires. The last 3 years of his deal, when he will be 38-40, he makes 1 mil per year. Do you really think he's going to stick around for that?

It doesn't matter if we trade him. We will still incur the penalty when he retires early. The only way to avoid the penalty is to use a compliance buyout on him. If we wait until next summer and he is injured during the buyout window, we won't be able to buy him out.

This isn't a hockey decision. It's purely financial.

Well Lecavalier will be bought out, what is the reason for Rangers to keep Richards.

I think that unless NY has a clear shot to get Lecavalier at a more cap friendly deal (IMO that's close to impossible...), They shouldn't just buy Richie out hoping to nab Lec. Need to think over variables in every way.
