Does Hiring Vigneault Mean a Reprieve for Brad Richards?

Do you really trust a caddy that much? I wouldn't trust anything these guys have to say right now. For all we know we're being fed junk. This is a terrible decision, and it will be even worse if he gets injured.

For what it is worth, it is SOMETHING that has been reported on the subject. The inverse -- buying out Brad -- is based upon conjecture and logic by the NYR fanbase and reporters.
 
NO, it's based on the fact that in the new CBA we are basically given a get out of jail free card a la amnesty buyout, and it will be flushed down the proverbial crapper given this team's luck.

I'm in favor of buying him out but they can still use the amnesty next year. I'm sure they'll wait to re-sign our RFAs before they can make make a decision on Brad.

Yes. And it's not like I don't like Brad. I just think they should avoid that risk of injury. It just doesn't sit well with me, but that's why I'm not the front office employees

Not likely. The window to buy out Richards begins at 11pm tomorrow night and ends at 5pm on July 4th.

There is a second buyout period that occurs later in the summer, but I'm reasonably certain that it is only available after a player goes to arbitration (which may not happen), and I'm not sure that it would include amnesty buyouts or just regular buyouts.

Edit: I was wrong. It actually requires 2 arbitration cases to trigger the 2nd buyout period.

11.18 Ordinary Course Buy-Outs Outside the Regular Period. Clubs shall have the right to exercise Ordinary Course Buy-Outs outside the regular period for Ordinary Course Buy-Outs in accordance with Paragraph 13(c)(ii) of the SPC. Each Club shall be limited to no more than three (3) such Buy-Outs outside the regular period over the term of this Agreement pursuant to Paragraph 13 of the SPC. However, in the event that a Club has only one salary arbitration hearing pursuant to Section 12.3(a) in a given League Year, such Club shall not be entitled to exercise such an Ordinary Course Buy-Out outside the regular period.

So both McD and Hagelin would have to go to arbitration to trigger the buyout window, and even then, I'm not sure it would include compliance buyouts. Richards has to be waived before he can be bought out, though since he has an NMC he can refuse to be waived. Either way, we have to make a decision soon.

Edit 2: It seems like compliance buyouts are only during the ordinary buyout window:

Compliance Buy-Outs. During the "Ordinary Course Buy-Out" periods following the 2012-13 NHL Season and 2013-14 NHL Season, in addition to any other Ordinary Course Buy-Outs a Club may want to effectuate pursuant to Paragraph 13 of the SPC, each Club may elect to terminate and "buy-out" the SPC of up to two (2) additional Players...

He has a no-move clause so he can't be waived. Players with NMCs can be bought out without waivers (I believe it's their choice if they get waived before getting bought out).
 
Richards must go...We need to resign alot of these guys who are young. Brad Richards has no legs

Too bad Richards never said that--he sent an email to post yesterday (saw it last night) denying the rumor.
Brad Richards does not know his fate for next season.

There had been a report on Twitter that the 33-year-old center told his caddie — during a Sunday round of golf with Mark Messier — he knew he would be back in New York next season.

Interesting the article also opines:

The Post has been reporting over the past three weeks the change in coaches from John Tortorella to Alain Vigneault would more likely than not give Richards a reprieve following a poor 2012-13 season.

If an unforeseen personnel move presents itself between now and July 4, it is possible the Rangers might indeed amnesty Richards even if they are not currently planning to do so. The Rangers used the first of their two allotted amnesty buyouts on defenseman Wade Redden before last season. Meanwhile, Messier, who had interviewed for the Rangers’ coaching position, has not indicated whether he intends to return to his post as special assistant to Sather.

Richards will be bought out at some point but imagine bryz is bought out signs with the islanders and they make playoffs based off his performance and flyers don't Even get in or find a starting goalie Hahahha would be awesome

I prefer the narrative where Bobrovsky goes to the KHL, Bryzgalov goes to Columbus and looks like a competent starter again, and whoever Philly brings in falls flat on his face.
 
Even if Richards was a productive player his contract & cap hit would handcuff this team for years to come. Rip the bandaid off now & buy him out. The fact that he has no legs anymore & is a shell of himself should be more than enough. Plus we have our own guys to sign & have other needs that need to be met.

I have a hard time feeling bad for Richards, he still get's his money & he will sign a decent deal somewhere else & try to get back to somewhat of the player he was before the Rangers. I can't even be mad about it It is what it is.It happens quite often here.
 
If the Rangers don't buy him out and he performs like last year or even worse--the fan base is going to be all over him the entire season. It has the potential for becoming very ugly.

Golfing with Messier. WTF!--Mark very much helped bring us the cup in '94 but his return for his second go around set this team back a good 5 years. He became a perimeter player--the team bought up every has been UFA and he presided as captain over a locker room more resemblant of a country club. He lost his winner's mojo back then though every year we had the spectacle of his making absurd and absolutely unnecessary beginning of the season locker room proclamations that this year for sure we were going all the way even though year after year we weren't even make the playoffs.

Personally I'm getting sick and tired of him lurking in the shadows and angling for this and for that. He's an attention seeker. Graves is great. Leetch is fine. Richter is fine. They find their niche--they work it. Messier needs to find something to do somewhere else.

Probably because he's seeing if he can trade him. In all likelihood there is more than one team out there who would be interested in seeing if Richards can bounce back in a new city. If he doesn't retire until 2017, the cap recapture penalty is only 2 years and $5M and change. By then the cap is likely to be back up around $80M. It might be a chance the Rangers are willing to take if someone offers a reasonable package for Richards.

Trading him saves Dolan some cash.

If bought out tonight, Dolan pays $24M over 14 years. The Rangers presumably fill the new cap space with additional salary. Dolan ultimately has to give the okay. Does he want to spend more money to rectify another Glen Sather mistake?

I would tend to agree. $24M spread out over 14 years is a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things. I just find it laughable that he continues to agree fixing Glennie Boy's mistakes with his own hard earned money.

Yeah, like you guys said, I don't think Dolan cares all that much. However, if a team decided they wanted to give something of value for him, then I think the team would take their chances with the cap recapture. Something of value meaning a current NHLer or decent prospect, or a 1st or 2nd round pick.

"During the [2004-05] lockout, I was coaching in P.E.I. and he skated with us for two months before going overseas. He was outstanding. In junior, you don't have a huge coaching staff, so he would take three or four guys and go work with them. He was so good with those guys ... I just wanted to reach out and have a conversation, see how he was doing after a tough end to the season." Vigneault plans to reach out to the rest of the players starting next week.

4. Hearing that, you might think Richards gets another season in New York to see if things improve with Vigneault. But the new coach wasn't going there. "I'm not involved in that process," Vigneault said. "I really haven't seen him the last two years."
