We had a thread in the mainboards that turned into trolling back and forth, simple question. In your opinion does Dustin Brown deserve a statue? He was the Captain for the Kings for their 2 cup wins, has a career highs of 33 goals and 61 points, has been a lifelong King.

1296 GP325 Goals387 Assists712 Points-36 +/-

I would retire his jersey but not give him a statue.

Yeah, it’s pretty embarrassing if you ask me. I am not trying to hate on Brown at all, I just think he himself must think it’s more than a little odd to be getting a statue beside some absolute giants of sporting history.
Magic (best PG ever), Gretzky (best hockey player ever), Kareem (leading NBA scorer of all-time although LeBron will pass him this seaosn most likely), West (Literal NBA logo), Shaq (Most dominate player in NBA history), Dustin Brown

Kobe doesn't even have one yet... :(

IMO from the viewpoint of our team, no, but also I have no stake in the Kings at all so if it makes their fans happy, then who am I to judge it. For that reason I just put "idc".

A statue is a much more personal thing between the team, player and fans than something like the HOF, where it would be a little more understandable to have external judgement. Based on the mock up it looks like they already have a bunch of statues so this isn't a situation like we have where we just have a statue for 99 and that's it, which makes it harder to justify making a statue for anyone else.

EDIT to say - fans don't have issues with his number being retired, then why should they have an issue with him getting a statue? Different franchises will have different criteria for retiring numbers and getting a statue, sometimes it's easier to get the number retired than it is to get a statue, other times they are possibly hand in hand. What works for your franchise might not work for another, no reason to take a dump on the way another franchise does it.

Well said.

I don't expect anyone outside of LA to say 'yes,' but I expected lot more of your opinion or "i don't care" rather than the insane amount of time wasted on vitriol by the OP and his ilk.

I just don't really get why people spend the time being mad about it. I edited to add, but the people mad about him getting a statue don't seem mad his number is being raised... but like what's the difference really? Some franchises want to give a statue and retire the number, some franchises are ultra strict on what it takes to get a statue. I don't see any reason to shit on a team because they do it one way that might not work for other teams.

If we were having a conversation about him going for the HOF, then I could see people elsewhere getting a little more emotional about it, but given the statue is for the LA fans period, I don't see the issue. For us, I don't even know if McDavid will get a statue because the bar seems extreme for the Oilers, but I also recognize that isn't the case for every single other team.

The statue situation outside of staples is starting to look like easter island too so it's not like dustin brown is gonna be the only lonely statue in the middle of the street, the city largely commemorates big occasions/moments rather than 'just' epic careers.

I'll try to look at this as if it was the Oilers. I would say no to Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey, Kevin Lowe, and probably "meh" to Mark Messier having a statue outside of Rogers place

There's a statue of Wendel Clark in Toronto.
Oh I was more talking about recent players since that's a completely different generation of the game. That is a bad one too. I feel like players back then in every sport got more recognition (which is why you see current players in every sport saying they used to play against firemen and plumbers lol)

I agree...BUT I would 100% say yes to putting a statue of Ryan Smyth pretty much anywhere so...

Sure why not. He was the kind of player that hockey fans lionize long after their retirement- tough, great leader, big effort if not necessarily points. It would be like Gillies or Bucyk getting a statue, and I don’t think anyone would find that crazy or weird.
