The nicknames on jerseys thing is just another example of how much of an individual game NBA basketball has become. The marketing, the on court rules, the cba rules, all lead to individual players being hyped over the team. The removal of the hand check made it almost impossible to defend star players, and most of the time a good defensive play is made on a star player it's still called a foul. The CBA made it much easier for elite players to put in their time on the Milwaukee's and Toronto's of the world and then leave for larger media markets to play the primes of their careers usually with other star players.

The difference in cultures between the NBA and the other sports shines through every time you hear NBA players talking about who they are going to play with, or where they are going to go even when they have years left on their contract. Could you ever imagine Kopitar and Kesler (UFA's the same year) openly talking about possibly playing together even though they have years left on their contracts? Yet that is common practice in the NBA.

Thanks for your eye-openers, Herby.

In the NBA alone, there's this perpetual notion "Star players carry/save teams all by themselves", but that gets proven otherwise; ad nauseum, Patrick Ewing and his time with the Knicks. Poor guy literally did it solo, to the point he got dissed in rap songs for winning none; he later admitted it in the NY Post, how he needed help.

Remember when Lebron carried the Cavs all by himself? He did take the team to the 2007 NBA Finals, only to get swept. Jason Kidd, 2002 NBA Finals, same result. Allen Iverson, 2001 NBA Finals. Reggie Miller, 2000 NBA Finals. Wow, that just made me realize that sports dynasties are the ultimate proof "no one is a one-man team".

You proved my point by mentioning the Cavs, they went from contenders to the second worst team in the NBA because they lost one player, the league is all about stars. The rules on and off the court dictate that the stars rule the game, it's not like that in any other sport.

The nicknames on jersey things are just another way of marketing star players rather than the team.

In defense of Lebron James, he did not receive help and ultimately faltered in his time in Cleveland, just like with Ewing and his time with the Knicks.

Yet, with the Lakers, Shaq and Kobe are individual superstars in their own right but got help in the form of a deep bench and roleplayer cavalry; I still remember when the Lakers had Brian Shaw, Devean George, Robert Horry, A.C. Green, Rick Fox, and Derek Fisher from the 2000 NBA Finals roster alone.

How could you leave out Mark Madsen?

The refereeing in the Clipper OKC game hit a real low tonight. Pathetic. Never seen any ending like that.

I caught the end of the game and it was ridiculous, the ball goes off a Thunder guy and they still get the ball.

Paul didn't even touch Westbrook and the refs gift the Thunder 3 FT's to seal the game.

and if Paul did foul Westbrook, then a foul should have been called when Paul lost the ball in an earlier sequence.

if we think the NHL is bad the NBA may be worse in slanting home court to the home team as much as possible.

You guys who watch the NBA act surprised. It is the most corrupt league in major sports. The same people who stole the 2002 Western Conf. championships from the Sacramento Kings are still in power, the same refs are still around.

They are going to do whatever they can to have a Durant-LeBron final, because like I said the NBA is all about individual matchups. It is not a team sport, it won't be Thunder vs. Heat it will be Durant vs. LeBron.

Ah, here we go. The old "game 6" argument. To which I say, I guess you don't have an opinion how the game was "stolen" by those same referees from the Lakers in game 5?

Pretty much this. The referees are greatly influenced by the home crowd. That's what makes it so hard to win on the road in the NBA.

But I don't see that at all in hockey. It's a crap shoot. The road team has as much chance to win as the home team does.

Clippers definitely played not to lose (and that's okay for an experienced elite team) since getting that 13-point lead. That Chris Paul blunder reminds me of Sam Cassell forgetting the 8-second rule.

The Game 6 result had more to do with Sacto missing a bunch of free throws down the stretch.

If you thought the NBA were a "Players' League" like you previously claimed, then let me introduce you to the time David Stern VETOED the Chris Paul deal to the Lakers, especially when the Lakers were about to send Pau Gasol to Houston and were actually giving both the Rockets and the now-Pelicans fair trade.

Oh, also, remember that 2008 NBA Finals? 2008 was actually the Lakers' 60th Anniversary and the same year the Lakers actually pulled off the Kwame Brown-Pau Gasol trade. :naughty::D

By default, the Original Six are to the NHL what the big-market teams are to the NBA. I know, I'm a fan of both Lakers (big-market team and Criterion Collection of the NBA) and the Kings (non-Original Six/Expansion Six team in the NHL).

Kenley Jansen will get things straightened out. He's a top 3 closer in baseball. way more command than Chapman. We knew he'd start slow. He didn't throw all offseason. His fastball is there, but his command is struggling. he starts every year like that. this year is compounded due to his heart murmer derailing his offseason. Command is an easy fix for a reliever. every reliever on the Dodgers has at least 12% command failure from their career this year. Hunnybun needs to get his smut together.
