I must say, I’m very impressed with the Armia, Gallagher, and Anderson have changed their games and become effective bottom 6 players. They’ve simplified their games tremendously, have been pretty gritty and effective with and without the puck.

Kudos to them for accepting their roles and adjusting their play. Too bad they are so overpaid because they’ve been playing so well.

Missed the game, I was at work. One good thing in this day of work someone granted me for the job I've done. Well, after saying that I still missed that game. If Habs are getting better I will have the chance to see other games like that.

What's not to like ?

Dobes with a shutout in his 1st NHL game
Dach scores 2, Newhook with 2 assists.
Caufield and Evans continue their respective great season.

In the Last 20 games, the Habs are 11-8-1
Scoring at a rate of 3.25 goals per game, ranked 8 in the NHL

If that 2nd line can get going even if it's for half the games left.....could be huge.
And there's also Carrier that keep stabilizing that D-squad on top of it.

It sucks, cause Primeau inability to stop a puck this season cost the Habs about 3 points and with those points, we would be breathing in the neck of the wildcard spots (Not to mention Laine's injury)
This team can really score. We just need a decent (doesn't have to be all-world) goalie (Dobes 🙏 ) + Demidov. I'd also like to see Matheson get traded at TDL and call up Mailloux now to get him more experience for next season.

Dach nice game............and Dobes, how did he look guys?
Dobes was calm and very well positioned. No panicky movements or flops. He's a big kid – 6'4" – and looked big in nets. He overcompensated a bit – huddling with the puck after freezing it, squeezing the posts to make sure the angle was covered – like he was terrified of making a mistake. Which he didn't, so all's good.

Best first NHL game for a Habs player since Ryan Poehling. Let's hope Dobes has a better story.

The only addition by subtraction candidate on D was Barron. He was such a borderline NHLer now that his presence hurt us. We went far and beyond what we deserved by getting Carrier in return.

But it becomes trickier with the other Ds. They’re all NHL Ds whether you like them or not. Whether you want them in Montreal or not. And the club has transitioned away from the break down and rebuild phase to a win now phase. If they want to replace say Matheson, they need to find a better D to plug the hole. Our GM can’t just flush away Ds because they don’t like their face anymore.

Upgrading on Matheson would be tough. Upgrading on Savard might be more doable.

Matheson just needs a good safe and fast partner (ie: Reinbacher/Carrier, not Savard) and reasonable TOI (20-22, not 27-28). Previously, he was overused/overexposed, playing with Guhle on the right who is clearly a lot better on his natural side.

Now, choosing between Hutson and Matheson is tough. Matheson is bigger but Hutson is a much better QB. Trading Matheson for a solid Carrier type of RD but in the 6'2"+ range would be that one move that makes our D for the future.

Hutson-New Guy/Reinbacher
Guhle-Carrier
Xhekaj-Reinbacher/New Guy.

Great game today, things are falling into place, still some moves to make but plenty of asset to make them!

Watching the Highlights, Dobes seemed pretty damn solid!

Also, the first Habs goal, a Panthers player had Laine lined up to take down but chose not to leading to our goal. It essentially happened cause the player had pitty on Patrick. At his age, he must learn to protect himself. He is so easily exposed. Rusty, maybe?
Rusty for sure but looking better every game, his forecheck was better and he’s winning the board battles, very patient with the puck.I liked his game today.

Jake Evans has been great this season. So many were writing him off but he is a valuable player.
I never quite understood why folks didn't want Evans on this team. He's basically Lehky lite (although these days he seems to have taken a step forward) and you 100% need players like this to win a cup. He's core for the next 4 years imo. And the style he plays, so long as he keeps his foot speed, he will have a long career.

Dude's got 3 shorties this season. That puts him 3rd place in the league (Reinhart and Tuch take 1-2 spot). That's not bad company at all.

Dobes becomes just the fourth Montreal Canadiens goaltender to record a shutout in his NHL debut (joining Bob Perreault '55, Wayne Thomas '73 and Yann Danis '05.)

Strangely, two of those four goaltenders wore the rather unorthodox sweater number 75.

Considering the only player other than Dobes or Danis to wear the number is defensemen Hal Gill, this is quite unusual. The club of Canadiens who wore #75 is smaller than the club of Canadiens to get a shutout in their first game!

Regardless of our position come TDL, matheson needs to be traded. I'd take a 2nd. Addition by subtraction.. nothing pains me more to say this about a good West Island kid, but he dies not fit our team.

I've said before: he's finally back to where he was just prior to Scheifele almost decapurating him. Years.... and now he's finally back to that same apex. If this is the true him, then he should be signed to a 4x4 and designated 3c

And the list also serves as a reminder to keep expectations in check.

I mentioned in the gdt the one time I recall a goalie pitching a shutout in his first game was Mike fountain against the Devils in their heyday. Not to say that it hasn't happened other times with more successful goalies but it's not an automatic sign of things to come.
