Amen to all of this. The straight up missed shots on a goal is another massive problem for the team that doesn't get talked about enough.

No, no you didn't know?

ALL teams play as laughably loose as we do. They just get saves. Or at least that's the narrative from people that don't watch other games.

And what other games do you actually watch? Ones from the 1980s? Because that's the only way I can see anyone believing your narrative that the stats are wrong, Bouchard is the antichrist, and a starting goalie who is 75th in GSAx is actually good enough.

local media was saying it was a risk trading him. I’m starting hear some media come around now…a little too late
I noticed this too, literally the day after the TDL. Something weird with the local media and the team, must have to play along to have access.

Like Rob Brown was defending Skinner like crazy and the day after he seemed unsure about the goaltending.

Nugent-Bowman was another one.

There’s probably a few more but I haven’t been listening to them since the TDL aside from Stauffer

More than you apparently if you think it's just normal to give up the insane volume of rush chances we do.

Oilersnation too.

It's like the moratorium on criticizing goaltending has been lifted now that the deadline is over and Skinner can't get anxious about losing his spot this season.

How can we trust that any of these human hand puppets are actually being honest about their opinions?

Skinner must practice using one of these bad boys.

That alone would allow Skinner to stop guessing and settle in a little more. I think his sv% could get close to the 0.910 level if the team tightened up their puck management and attention to detail in the D zone.
Structure has to be prioritized...better goaltending usually follows.
Will it happen?
I am becoming more skeptical because it seems like that kind of structure is antithetical to the identity of this team.
They can do it for stretches but thats as good as it gets. Its like asking a perimeter player to hit and go into the heavy areas of the ice...he can do it short term but its never sustainable because he will always default back to the player he really is.

Interestingly enough that is the very thing that has IMO been the cause for some very capable coaches to be fired.
Knoblauch could be next.
Gregor said on his show today that since Jan 1st, the Oilers for 30TH in odd-man rushes given up 5-on-5 and 25th in High Danger chances against the rush

that speaks to poor structure in their game

They don't get past the Kings with this version of Skinner, winning a Cup is pure fantasy tbh. Say what you want about Skinner's tenure here but he's quite clearly worse this season than he was the last few.

There's also the issue, still, that the Oilers aren't getting enough from their wingers and the defense has yet to be sorted out. Is Ekholm even going be 100% again this season?
I don't know, this is looking like a quick exit playoff run. Something is off with this group beyond just goaltending although, yes, that's the main culprit. Anybody who thinks this is solely a goaltending issue hasn't watched the team the last month and a half.

That correlates 100% with what I am seeing.

This teams current level of poor team defence (and poor puck management) wont even get them out of the first round. A goalie (any goalie) isnt going to make a meaningful difference if that doesnt change.

The organization does this kind of thing all the time. Usually when someone is in the good graces but struggling, they're off limits to the media who is told to pick on someone the fans like. Until they aren't, then usually they're fired.

It's a good sign in this case though - I have a feeling that Schwartz is on the way out.

Not likely. Skinner has a close to .500 record this season and without OTW it would be BELOW .500. Try to imagine how bad Skinners record would be without the club being 10-3 in OT.

Leads to my next point that the Oilers have a meager 27 regulation W's this season. Without an inordinate 10OT wins we're possibly not even sniffing a playoff spot. A full 13 clubs have MORE regulation wins than we do. One of them are the NYR if you can believe it who have two more Reg wins than the Oilers.

A lot of how a team is considered is based on its last season. Not on the current season but this isn't even the same team and missing a ton of jump from we had last season. Everything from our goalies to goal differential to regulation record suggests we're not even a top team anymore.

Keep in mind Skinner also has been pulled 4 times, including 1 win and 3 losses that are currently on Pickards record...

No way in hell. Each round we automatically lose the goaltending match-up.
This is an even bigger issue in a year where we’re having trouble scoring. Most of the things we had going for us that tipped the scales in our favour last year have disappeared on us this season. Automatically losing the goaltending battle is going to be a hill too big to climb this time.

Most people are hoping they are going to flip the switch come playoff time... that's the only thing people are hoping for.

I’ve never been a fan of Skinner. The team pushed him over Konovalov so Konovalov, who I believe would have become a better goalie once he adjusted to the NA game, saw this and went home to the K.

Skinner ain’t it. Never was it, never will be it. AHL starter at best. Buy him out this summer and move on. See if NYI. has any interest in moving Sorokin and if he’d waive for Edmonton. I doubt he would but I see Oettinger is a RFA. If Dallas fizzles out in the playoffs, make an inquiry about him too (it’s also doubtful I know). Otherwise, try again on Gibson or Binnington or Saros.

Side note: Despite Van scoring 3 on Wolf tonight, he’s also made a ton of huge saves, which Skinner would have gotten beaten on. Embarrassing that this franchise cannot a) draft a good goalie and b) develop one into a regular starter.

…and Schwartz’s WHL stats:

View attachment 992458
The guy had no clue how to stop pucks in the WHL and we wonder why every goalie under him at this level sucks donkey ass.

How in the f*** does a guy with shitty stats like that get to be an NHL Goalie coach for a decade AND advisor to the GM as to which free agent goalie to sign for 5 years at $25M?
