wow that would be a steeper regression then Stepan's hairline
In his 1st year as a Ranger, he was worth 11.6 mil. Even in his second year, I'd say he was worth it even though the numbers weren't quite as good. In the last two years, he has absolutely not been worth that contract, as his numbers have regressed significantly at 5 on 5:

The only reason he still puts up the points he does in the regular season is because the PP has been very good that last 2 seasons:

In his 1st year, he was a 200 foot player. He backchecked, worked hard in all 3 zones, and went to the dirty areas of the ice. Now he does none of that. He has become a perimeter player who makes his living off of risky plays and by getting more ice time than any other forward on the team.

I'm hoping that Lavi can get him to play the way he did when he first came to the Rangers, the way Torts taught him to play. Even if it results in less points for him, it will ultimately make us a better team.

Vegas has his line at o/u 93.5, so it’s unlikely barring a season-long shooting% bender. Laviolette’s teams usually don’t have their best players exceed the PPG threshold by that much, but I still expect Panarin to be their leading scorer.

Assuming fully healthy years, I’m going to guess with their current forward set-up we’ll see their top guys post 82g paces for something like this. I’m probably being a bit optimistic and generous here:

Panarin: 24G-63A-87pts
Zibanejad: 35G-46A-81pts
Kreider: 32G-26A-58pts
Trocheck: 26G-38A-64pts
Kakko: 21G-31A-52pts
Chytil: 23G-33A-56pts

Leaving out guys like Wheeler/Laf/Cuylle since I think they’ll be moving around the top-9 a lot, while the six guys I listed will have the most stable roles. Didn’t add in the defense either, but you’d figure it’s heavily carried by Fox with contributions from everyone else. If Matt Carle can score 40 under Laviolette, you have to be optimistic about Miller and Gus.

Once they get their bearings, I’m going to guess they end up in a similar spot as last year being above league average in scoring (12th most goals) and near best in goals against (4th fewest). That’ll be their recipe for success if they can add in playing with more structure and in a sound system

My god this forum's faith in Panarin is at an all-time low.. sad to see.

That's no one but Panarins fault. He's playing an extremely selfish brand of hockey these days. Rack up easy, non-contact assists on the power play and float around 5 on 5.

I'd be surprised if he cracks 85 this year, let alone 100. His 5 on 5 play is abysmal.

I don't understand the narrative that he "only scores on the PP". Over the past 3 years, 37% of his points have come from the PP.

Every top end player feasts on the PP. Over the past 3 years almost all the top end guys sit between 25-40%. McDavid and Drai are 40% and 41%.

His "Abysmal" 5v5 play led forwards on the team in pts/60 and CF%.

As long as we're a playoff team, I won't get on his case if he only puts up 60. He's under the microscope in the playoffs though.
I sure will when you consider his price tag. I mean, for his price tag, he should be putting up 100pts, but management offered him the deal. He wasnt wrong for taking it.

If Panarin puts up 120+ points, I'll let it slide, but the fact remains that his 5 on 5 numbers have declined every year.

It shouldn't be a primary focus. If it happens it happens.

What I'd like to see is Laviolette taking more control over Artemi's ice time than Gallant did. Artemi has a bad habit of overextending his shifts and when it happens in the defensive zone we often wind up bleeding goals and sometimes wins.

I want to be optimistic.

His PP production will be there IMO.

His 5v5 production has much more potential

So, yes. He breaks 100

I enjoy your optimism about the 5v5 improvements under Lavi and I hope you are correct. I’m nervous.
