Do you take the duo of Makar + McDavid each at 16M$ AAV for 8 years? Trades not allowed

People voting no are overthinking it.
Not really.

As someone else pointed out, the Wings would need like 9 ELC or min wage contracts to make it compliant.

That’s:
1. One way to ruin your depth
2. One way to be one injury away from out of the playoffs.

WAY too much money, mostly for Makar

Nope, not how you build a winning team.

People have argued the cap will rise but as we have seen while the cap rises so does player salaries. You’d perpetually be stuck with mediocrity

Hell
It’s an extremely easy no. The rest of the team is going to be awful. This is 79 M:

6M 16M 4M
4M 6M 1M
1M 3M 1M
1M 1M 1M

16M 4M
4M 1M
1M 1M

6M
1M

Unless you have multiple home run ELCs you will be lucky to make the playoffs with two 16M players.

I think yes and no applies here depending the type of franchise you have. If your a Canadian team or a high profile US market team where success is important, I say no as you just flat out will be underperforming as a team tieing up too much money into 2 guys (this isn’t the NBA folks where 2-3 superstars gives you a dynasty). If your a lower profile market with attendance issues like a Columbus, Florida, or a Buffalo you say yes. Because the likelihood of winning a cup for those franchises is soooo tiny that you take the 2 generational talents to draw in ticket sales, merchandise sales and concessions.
