Do you believe in Frederik Andersen? Would you re-sign?

Depends completely on what the contract looks like. 2 year max at less than his current cap hit and he can stay.

Cap strapped team that cannot afford to give every player a raise or bring back at current cap hit. Freddy's work has not resulted in deserving a raise or even current cap hit. Doesn't mean another team will not offer him $5M or more but he is not worth that to Toronto based on their current contract structure.

Sorry I don't believe, sure he has a good game every now and then but mostly this season he looks bad. I certainly wouldn't extend him.
I always ask myself “was Andersen the best goaltender this game” and for the last year and a half, the answer to that question has been no more than yes.

I don’t think he’s a bad goalie, but I also don’t think this team’s defense is good enough to win a cup with him playing average. And at best, the last year and a half, he’s been average.

Two of those goals last night weren't on him, but he could've hugged the post tighter on the first one. He was swimming in his crease on a couple of near misses as well. Not a great game, but he played well enough for us to win.
You can find fault in all 3 goals against last night. The first 1 like you said he wasn't hugging his post. He was hugging it, then he pulled away, hugged it again and pulled away and the puck went in. Not really sure why he was doing that.

The 3rd goal, he got beat short side on an unscreened shot.

The 2nd goal was a cross ice pass. Seems like he had no chance right? Wrong, that pass across the ice was so slow, he could have easily beat that pass across standing on his feet and being set for the shot. So unless he didn't see the pass happen thats a bad goal.

No I don't believe in him. He looks inconsistent again this year and has only had one good playoff series for us, where he STILL lost the goaltending duel.

Things haven't changed much for me. I would be very surprised if he is re-signed. There's just the question of which goalie combines with Campbell to form the tandem for the Leafs moving forward?

is he even our top choice at $4-5 mil, though?

Fair question. Rask and Bennington are above him in my opinion. He probably sits in that 2nd tier for upcoming UFAs with Rinne, Dubnyk, Raanta, Grubauer, Halak.

I think if you could sign him to an extension now for 2 years at $4M a year, would probably be a solid move.

He's starting to look like his game is going through some regression, which isn't surprising since he's hit 30 and he wasn't an elite talent during his prime (he was good though)

Unless his AAV and term are in keeping with where he is as a player currently (around 3M for a couple of years) I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot barge pole

Either he tandems with Campbell and gets paid like that or he should walk

He isn't worth #1G starter dollars or term imo

brutal goal.

not just beat, but beat by a mile. he wasn't close. there were acres of net to shoot at.

his flops across the net are so bad technically and they're not even fast anymore. he gives himself almost no chance to stop those.

If you look at the GAA and SV% leaders for the North Division they are all pretty ugly.

Only 2 goalie (min 6 gp) are over .900... Hellebuyck and Markstrom and 3 under 3.00 gaa, (Price)

There's some brutal defensive units in our division

If you look at what's in front of Andersen and compare it with the other division teams it looks pretty good

He should be better than what he's giving us, which is pretty piss poor

I'm a fan of his, but gotta admit...
Freddy was very poor last night. on that goal he completely failed to track the play, and the attempt to get across thereafter was laughable. I as well am a fan of Freddy, but I have really started to dissect a lot of his GA this year to try and identify what is actually goin on. Not sure if it is entirely fair (probably not). But what I am noticing is that Freddy is not reading the plays well enough. You get a goal like Horvat's for example where it looks like a complete breakdown, open net bury, and the Layman would say "he never had a chance". When in actuality, Freddy never gave himself the chance on that play. Was it a bit of a breakdown? ya..but there really is no reason why a 6'4 Andersen cant see around a 6'0 crouching Marner to see the puck on JT Millers blade on JT's strong side wing. Far to upright, and was in zero position to either make a save on a JT Miller shot, or in this case push off laterally to make a save on the Horvat 1T. Not to mention he was very slow to react to the over pass to Horvat, and never gave himself a realistic chance at making the save. Freddy has great extremities, and when he is on, he is positionally tight. But far too often this year and last there have been goal's like this, where he fails to read the play and completely eliminates the possibility of him making the save.

He didn't even need to push off for that second goal though. That pass was pretty slow, he could have beat the pass across while staying on his feet. A quick T-push and he would have been perfectly set for Horvat's shot.

Leafs dominated last night but it felt like one of those nights with Freddy where anything looked like it could have went in.

Short term deal, 2 years at 5M per I don't mind. Small risk and he's an average starter. Should something better come around we can always move him. If he's asking for more let him go, he's about 20th in terms of goalie rankings in my books.

The Leafs only have 2 reliable choices, Freddy and Binnington. Both ill command 6.5 to 7.5 mill on a multi year deal. Those of you that think Freddy is signing for under 4 mill are out to lunch.
If the Leafs sign either one, then Kerfoot is gone imo. Just not enough room with this cap. I guess an alternative would be to try and sign a RFA, but the only 2 that are decent (Demko and Samsonov) would very likely be matched. Freddy just makes sense.

Freddy is not worth 6M + If that's his asking price, easy pass. He struggles making routine saves, his rebounds have been god awful, and for whatever reason he's sliding all over the crease after every save. I never feel confident with him in net, even on the worst shots from centre ice, or from the side boards I'll be holding my breath hoping it doesn't go in or lead to a stupid rebound.

I think he eliminated the possibility of getting into position with a T-push by his slow read on the pass. I think he didn't realize JT Miller had dished the puck until it was off his blade, forcing him to try and push off and cover the bottom of the net. It wasn't pretty either way you look at it. But at that point he has no clue where Horvat's shot is going, he was just playing the odds, and tried to cover the bottom 1/3rd. It just goes back to what I was originally saying, he is not reading the play. He failed to read pass off JT's stick, and was slow to put himself in good position to make a save

Young Reimer plus a few nice young offensive pieces (Kessel Kadri JVR Gardiner) drag that team into the playoffs for the first time in eons and the front office goes out and adds BERNIER CLARKSON AND BOLLAND, and then re-sign Phaneuf to a huge contract, completely blowing our cap for years.

What an absolute disaster of an offseason.

Thank God we have dubas now.
Forgot about Bolland. The only thing he was good at was blowing powder up his nose.

It's hard to say. Andersen, along with poor coaching and defense has let us down in the first round of the playoffs time and time again.

On the other hand, Andersen has had big game moments and would be likely cheaper than most goalies.

We are stuck against the cap and need Andersen to play well enough to make a run for it. By all rights this should be our cup contending year and f he can't pull it together, I am more than fine with rolling the dice with Campbell/ rookie goalie.

Although I am sure Leafs Management has different ideas in mind.
