Do you buy into any conspiracy theories about the NHL? (E.g., rigged lotteries, Sedin twins are actually triplets and the third one rotated in periodically to keep the other two fresh, etc etc.)

I have two:

1. When the Florida Panthers tried to draft a 17 y/o Ovechkin in 2003, they didn’t actually believe in that bogus “leap year” theory.

IMO he was drafted because they thought the rumors of him being overage might be true, and they were hoping to land his rights in the event his “real” birth certificate ever surfaced.

2. Walter Gretzky orchestrated all the more unorthodox aspects of Wayne’s pre-NHL career (WHA, 20 year “personal services” contracts) solely as a means to circumvent the NHL draft and avoid Wayne being stuck with a terrible team like the “Mickey Mouse” Rockies/Devils.

I don’t think this is a conspiracy but the league refuses to let go of the Original 6 obsession because they don’t know how to market properly. This is the only one of the major 4 sports that shoves that stuff down our throats.

KGB infiltrators stole Pavel Datsyuk from Area 51. They put his otherworldly abilities to good use on the ice.

I looked it up and they tried to argue that taking away leap year days would have made him eligible. Lol. He missed the cut-off by two days.

I think there may have been some funny business when it came to the 2005 draft lottery.

Pittsburgh was bleeding cash, close to relocating and then they landed the top pick in a. draft where the best prospect was considered generational and a franchise saviour. A carbon copy of 1985, except there was no lottery then. Mario had taken control of the team a few years prior and saved them for the second time so this almost felt like a thank you.

Even after Crosby was drafted, it took until March 2007 to get an arena deal completed.

Why are we so naive to believe that draft lotteries aren't corrupt? Sure the level of the conspiracy carries weight on what is more likely than the other. Hell, just recently a lot of the NBA owners and fans made mention that the NBA lottery was rigged because the Mavericks got Cooper Flagg just months after trading away Luka Doncic. I admit it seems pretty convenient that they got the 1OA myself. Who is to say it doesn't happen in other leagues? There was a 1.8% change that they would get the 1st overall pick and well they got it and drafter the ROY. If you remember to believe only a fraction of what is being force fed to us conspiracy theory's are born.

This one gets better......
If anyone remembers...also to "save" a struggling marquis franchise, in 1985 the NY Knicks somehow, someway managed to win the NBA draft lottery for the #1 overall pick...that pick...Patrick Ewing. Other teams had worse records, but the Knicks won the pick. Who was the Assistant NBA Commissioner at the time...Gary Bettman. He might not have had anything to do with that one, but he's a smart guy and probably learned very quickly how to pull it off when necessary.

i believe the league rigged the lottery to give Pittsburgh Crosby . it's just too suspicious.
The Leafs winning this year has got to be up there too. It's not like they are anywhere near where Pittsburgh was on the brink of the city losing the team, but the League just benefits too much financially by having it's big market teams do well.

Between sinking to 5th to keep their pick, then jumping up to first with just 8.5% odds -- and all in the year they lost Marner and went from 1st to 8th in the Atlantic. Just so much had to fall exactly in place for this to happen that it feels made up.

2019 finals, the standard shifted mid series after Berube's whining. That is what caused the game 7, which the Bruins did indeed implode for. There never should have been a game 7 however if the Blues were called on penalties.

Florida's recent dominance was similarly manufactured as the NHL needed its next villain to the level of earning the Department of Panthers Safety ratherironically.

In the modern gambling era both are terrifying as it shows how easy the league can adjust outcomes for ratings and the fans are an after thought.

Lindros used to have many conspiracies following him. Perhaps he was misguided by his Dad, but he always seemed to have controversy following him. Yeah. I get it. He didn't want play for Quebec, but it went well beyond that.

The 2005 lottery was rigged, and you'll never convince me otherwise. The whole thing was such BS with the way they did the lottery balls, and how Pittsburgh didn't lose a ball because they traded for the 1OA pick to get Fleury, and even them losing the lottery in 2004 to "only" get Malkin.

MAF, Malkin, Crosby. in three straight drafts.
