I see either Pardy Weber or Brennan moved early on (not much value in any of them, but meh) then Leopold moved at the deadline.

Well, you can cross the Oilers off the list of potential trade partners:

https://twitter.com/EdmontonOilers/status/290899226991423488

(Then again, after the Vanek offer sheet, would Darcy even want to do business with them?)

Good, I'm glad they didn't undersell on Leopold, who's worth more than a 3rd. By the way, if you ever needed to see the value of defensemen, look no further than Fistric and his -0.8 GVT against below-average competition.

Alexander Sulzer

T.J. Brennan

Sulzer and Brennan have received more votes than Sekera. Buffalo News readers actually seem to think Sekera should be the 7th dman?

People are stupid. Well, most of them. Especially when it comes to objectively evaluating athletes.

TBN readers have been subjected to that rag's irrational campaign against Sekera for years. It's no surprise they don't see his value.

You should've stopped there.

My goodness I weep for those that didn't vote Sekera. Wow.

I was second to vote. The survey had toggle buttons (instead of the correct check boxes it's showing now) so I could only select one. I selected Sekera.

TBN described Sekera as underachieving because he only had 16 pts last year. Can't decide if I'm more disappointed with the News for a complete lack of effort or with the voters for a complete inability to think for themselves. Might be a tie...

As Zip alluded to, TBN's staff of writers has kind of had it out for Sekera for a couple years now. It doesn't surprise me that they'd paint him in a negative light.

I'm more disappointed in the fans that can't see that Sekera was probably played the best of our Dmen last year (but that thread has been and gone....and that dead horse has been beated hundreds of times)

Give them some slack.

Few of those fans are as exposed to advanced stat breakdowns as we are. I would argue posters on here are not the norm. Some contribute some incredible breakdowns and analysis of the game and various players. Sekera's game isn't as obvious to a casual hockey fan as say a Brennan who they can see is putting up great offensive numbers in Rochester.

Don't forget the contract. Sekera has huge, huge value. 7th dman. LOL. Cap hit is $2.75 million with actual salary of $1.75 in last two years. He'd garner a ton in trade. He needs to become #3 guy in terms of ice time.

I don't really look at that stuff, but I'll go entire games without even realizing Sekera is on the team. That's the mark of a good defenseman. Especially for a guy who can and will make highlight reel plays on the rush and in the offensive zone.

I'm not surprised. A lot of casual fans (who only know the Sabres) that I know don't seem to like Sekera (they also loved Roy too... so yeah not a lot of logic there).

Myers - Sekera
Ehrhoff - Sulzer
Regehr - Brennon/McNabb

Trade Leopold.

On the other hand..... with a 48 games in 100 days season defense men may drop like flies. Having 8 or 9 seems like a good idea.

Sekera doesn't make a splash on the score sheet and Roy does, not suprised.

When was the last time the team had this little turnover on defense? Myers, Ehrhoff, Sekera, Leopold, Weber, Regehr all returning, plus the prospects that got significant NHL time.

With quite a bit of turnover on D in recent years, I think I want to stay the course for the moment.

Yes, exactly. I love our mix of defenseman (although McNabb going AWOL this year hurts the toughness quotient.)

Move Leopold for a 2nd (plus conditional 3rd/4th?)
Put Sekera with with Myers, Pardy/Weber with Regehr?
Or Myers - Regehr and Sekera - ??? (don't like this)

If we try to move Pardy/Weber/Brennan can we get anything worthwhile back?

Depends on what worthwhile is. There's a chance we could lose all 3 for nothing before the start of next season so a pick is better than that. I think all 3 players have lots of potential to make any return for Buffalo look bad. Not that they're as good as him but Ehrhoff was once a victim to the numbers game and I could see any of these 3 players playing far ahead of what we could get for them like Ehrhoff did.
