Stamkos will generally be regarded as the superior player, but outside of his peak, was he really better? And I ask this as someone who despises Marchand and has no problem with Stamkos.
Stamkos has more top ten scoring finishes and was clearly a better goal scorer, but Marchand was a more complete player (douchebag that he was) and his playoff career has to be considerably better than Stammer's. Both spent a lot of time playing with talented linemates and on good teams.
I'll still take SS because I think that at his best, he was on a different level than Marchand. But the prime and career gaps can't be too big.
Yeah I think you're right.
Here's their stats and awards finishes..
Stamkos
Points: 2, 2, 5, 5, 6, 9
PPG: 3, 3, 6, 7
Goals: 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 4, 7, 9
Hart: 2, 6, 8, 11, 11, 11, 14
Marchand
Points: 3, 5, 5, 6
PPG: 4, 5, 5, 6, 9
Goals: 4, 6, 6
Hart: 5, 5, 7, 9, 11.
Selke: 9, 9, 10, 12, 12, 16
Stamkos 60 goal season is probably the best year between the two, but I think you can reasonably argue that Marchand's 2018-19 season is the 2nd best
And maybe even Marchand's 2020-21 covid season (3rd in scoring) over Stamkos's 2012 shortened season (2nd in scoring)
Then afterwards you could still argue Marchand mostly comes out on top at least when comparing their most productive seasons (top 10 finishes) depending on whether you value Marchand's better two way play over Stamkos's goalscoring gap, cause the point placements are pretty damn close.
